DIRECTOR of Rugby Seb Reynolds has warned his side they will need to be at their best when travelling to winless Taunton Titans tomorrow (3pm).
While Rams have enjoyed a perfect start with four bonus-point wins from four, it has been more of a struggle for their opponents who are yet to register a win – their nearest miss a 36-33 home reverse against Blackheath on the opening day.
Yet with a strong home record against Rams – they have won four of the past six matches and have not lost by more than five points – Seb commented: “You can argue they could have won last week, and I just don’t see them as an 0-4 team.
“They’re a side who are going to win games throughout the year and we’re under no illusions when you go to Taunton you’re going to get a tough game – they were very threatening against Moseley, their rugby is exciting and they go from deep with a real threat.
“Tomorrow will be no different because they’re always a good side, very strong at home and their DoR Tony (Yapp) has done such a good job.”
The visitors make four changes to the side which beat Rosslyn Park last time out, Ben Atkins and Vince Everitt starting in the back row with Ollie Cole and Jak Rossiter restored to the starting line-up at scrum-half and wing respectively.
Seb explained: “Vinny’s been unfortunate with a couple of knocks in pre-season which put paid to the earlier games, but he’s been chomping at the bit and you could feel the energy in the Brunel game last week and we’re delighted to welcome him back into the squad.
“Ben’s been very patient and let his rugby do the talking, he’s understood his role and last week what he did was a big part in winning us the game – we needed to sort the breakdown out and he did that. He deserves a start and we’re very excited for him.
“The scrum halves all offer different things – Ed (Hoadley) has been great for the past two games while the two Ollies were exceptional before that. They’re all quality players, along with Alex Sparkes, who need to play rugby and they’re working so well as a team.
“They’re late on a Tuesday night, having dinner together, eating slowly and talking lots but becoming a great little unit.”
The final two changes come on the bench with a first appearance of the season for Connor Hayhow, along with a debut for hooker Calum Scott.
And Seb ended: “Everyone knows what Connor can do and when he’s on form he’s one of the most dangerous players at this level of rugby – it’s great to have him in.
“We’re pleased to have Calum here – it’s hard for these young players to have been in a professional environment because there’s an argument to say (if it weren’t for what happened to London Irish) he’d be playing Premiership Cup right now and playing lots of games for them.
“But what’s happened has led to him being here and he’s part of the family already, on a journey with us and we are very excited for his future – for anyone who hasn’t seen him yet, he’s also very, very quick!”
