TEAM NEWS: TURNOVER KING VINCE RETURNS AT TAUNTON

TEAM NEWS: TURNOVER KING VINCE RETURNS AT TAUNTON

Rich Ashton29 Sep 2023 - 12:15

First-time starter Atkins, Cole and Rossiter also get the nod in Somerset!

OPEN-SIDE flanker Vince Everitt makes his first start of the National One season as one of four changes to the Rams team for tomorrow’s trip to Taunton Titans (3pm).

The turnover specialist endured an injury-hit pre-season but was back to his best for a Rams XV against Brunel University nine days ago, and is now joined in the back-row by first-time starter Ben Atkins and captain and No. 8 Robbie Stapley.

Atkins has impressed in his four appearances off the bench, grabbing three tries and second only so far this season to hooker Max Hayman (four), who is part of an unchanged front five with Ant Marris, tight-head prop James Baker and in-form second row duo Connor Stapley and Dan Swain.

The latter returns to his former club having been selected as part of the National One Team of the Season, a juggernaut who unfortunately missed last term’s homecoming due to a concussion but likely to receive a warm welcome in Somerset.

There is a change at scrum-half with Ollie Cole back in, top points-scorer Fraser Honey remaining outside him as last week’s 100-man Drew Humberstone and Ellis Jones again team up in midfield.

The final change to the starting line-up sees Jak Rossiter back on the right wing, Axel Kalling-Smith moving to the left and two-try Rosslyn Park hero Zach Clow reverting to full-back.

There is a first cap in line from the bench for ex-London Irishman and Pangbourne College alumni Calum Scott, the hooker joined by Sean McDonnell-Roberts in providing front-row cover.

Ross Crame also gets a first call of the season with the former Mini able to play in the second or back row and having caught the eye on all his appearances so far this season.

Connor Hayhow is another to get a first chance from the bench this term – aiming to add to his 27 tries in 59 first-team appearances which also remarkably includes four hat-tricks.

He also grabbed a double for the Titans against Chinnor Flacons recently, with the final member of the bench livewire scrum-half Ollie Monye, himself having scored two tries in three first-team games this season.

Another No. 9, Ed Hoadley, fly-half Rowan Grundy and versatile forward Josh Collis head to Veritas Park as travelling reserves.
