RAMS Titans got back to winning ways as they secured an entertaining 38-33 Raging Bull Shield Division One success at Blackheath Heathens (2nd XV).
The visitors made a dream start as they took an early lead, Calum Scott barging over from close range for captain Tom Humberstone to add the extras.
Things got better shortly after as full-back Zach Clow finished off a slick backs’ move with a strong hand-off and finish on the left, and it was 17-0 inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour as more fine work from the three-quarters set Aaqil Attah away for his side’s third try.
However, Titans dropped off slightly and gave Club a chance to come back into the contest, one the hosts took as they got on the board through Keelan Butler, Chris Bell landing a brilliant touchline conversion to reduce the deficit to 10 points.
Titans, though, wrapped up the try bonus-point before the break, Vince Everitt getting over from a couple of metres out as Humberstone landed the kick for 24-7.
Liam Goodison was sin-binned for a high tackle before half-time, and with the crowd growing ahead of the first-team game to follow, it was Blackheath who collected the first points of the second period when No. 8 Ben Charnock picked up from the base of a five-metre scrum to power over.
Bell landed another good kick, but the Titans’ maul was becoming more and more of a weapon and home replacement Dami Adebayo was eventually yellow carded for bringing a set-piece down with it marching towards the line.
This was only a brief respite, however, Everitt doubling his tally from the maul for 31-14 almost immediately.
Yet Blackheath refused to yield, collecting a third converted try through Dafydd Lloyd and a deficit now back to 10.
The visitors, though, effectively put the game to bed late on as a sublime Humberstone cross-field kick found Karl Quartey to cross on the right, the skipper on target for 38-21 with time running out.
There was still time for Blackheath to run in two more tries, however, ensuring a brace of bonus-points as firstly they mauled their way over with four minutes remaining – Bell maintaining his perfect record – before Lloyd doubled his tally with the final play following a strong Charnock charge and a deft Bell off-load.
The kicker finally blotted his copybook, but it mattered not as full time was called for a fourth win in six league games for Titans.
They travel to Ampthill 1881s on Saturday.
