The boys are back in town...

After a difficult run of 4 defeats in a row, the Dragons Teeth travelled to a rainy and sodden Marlow looking to get their season back on track

With the final words of encouragement delivered in a changing room that would have made a phone box look spacious, The Teeth took to the field in determined fashion.

The Teeth made light of atrocious conditions and looked to keep the ball in hand.

Sam Longley, Ben Barrows and John Raspin to name just a few of the forwards, carried manfully making hard yards.

The line out, with Graham Enright on as replacement hooker, clicked into gear with some sexy catch and drives.

All appeared well... However, after half an hour the deadlock had not been broken. Until skipper, Matt Flannigan dummied from the base of a ruck 5 metres out and beat 2 defenders to touch down for an unconverted try (stealing glory from Harry Chapman).

With conditions like this though, kicking was virtually impossible... or so we thought.

The second half was equally tight, with some great defending by The Teeth and a Chris Kessell try disallowed for... seriously, no idea why.

After 65 minutes, disaster struck, and Marlow managed to somehow sneak over for a converted try. 7-5 to Marlow.

The Teeth fought back and earned a penalty 30 metres out.

The skipper turned to Roddy Clark and asked was the kick on, given the conditions.

“I’ve got this skip” was the steely-eyed response...

And boy, did he. 8-5 to The Teeth with 7 minutes to go.

But NO!!!!! A penalty was awarded to Marlow, for a very harsh offside against a turning forward. Up stepped the Marlow kicker... and he nailed it. 10-8, 78 minutes on the clock.

To any normal team, that would be it. But as Billy Ocean once sang, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”.

Harry Chapman who was perpetual motion secured a turnover. From the penalty, The Teeth soon found themselves in the Marlow half.

“Last play,” said the ref, and still The Teeth pressed forward.

Tom Ansell took a pass from the skipper, beat 2 defenders and passed inside to Sam Longley who offloaded, only to be thwarted by a deliberate knock on.

And so, Bonnie Tyler, you don’t need to be holding on for a hero. As up stepped Roddy Clark, to nail the last minute penalty!

Cue the final whistle, and The Teeth had redemption. Two very close fixtures between the two teams, with only one point in it.

Oh boy, was the pain beautiful for all who played.

Fulltime score: 10-11

Tries: M. Flannigan
Pens: R. Clark (2)
