On Sunday October 11th 2009 we welcomed Hammersmith & Fulham RFC to Old Bath Road for the second encounter of serious rugby for the season.

Redingensians were able to put out a full squad unfortunately the visitor’s were depleted and throughout the games borrowed two or three players. With this disadvantage, the home team were able to dominate play profiting from players in their normal positions.

The first try came from a flowing backs move with the ball going down the line ending up in Calum Welsey’s hands to touch down. Conversion missed.

The next try came from an Ensian’s kick ahead which bounced unkindly for the defence leaving Calum who was following up to collect and touch for his second try. Andrew Hester slotted over the conversion.
The third of the day came from the backs again. Moving forward, Ed Giles put a neat pass to Ben Laflin who ran a nice line to touch under the post. Andrew put over the conversion.

From the re-start, Shane Hancock pick up the ball and ran straight through to score under the post. Andrew obliged with the extra 2 points. This brought an end to the first period of play.

After the break, the attack did not stop. From the loose, Fergus Thiele won the ball and linking into the backs who passed it down the line ending with Guy Sharp for another score. Conversion missed.
The next try was a little de ja vue but this time it was John Williams who gathered the ball on the half way and ran through a number of tackles to score. Conversion missed.

More good work in the loose brought out by Shane who linked to the backs again with good handling leaving Harry Clarke to touch down. Conversion missed.

The next lineout was won well by the forwards and when the ball came out to Shane he again was able to run through to score under the posts. John this time added the conversion.

The next try was one of real quality. From a mêlée on the Ensian try line, Fergus came out with the ball and again linked into the backs, who then ran forward committing defenders to the tackle before passing to the next back. This continued all the way down the line with Guy the grateful recipient of the final pass with the touchline the last obstacle to the score. Conversion missed. At this point both teams took another drink break.

Again, the break brought no relief for our visitors. With a line out on our own 22 meter line, the opposition threw a long ball to the back of the line which was picked up by John who ran through to the opposition’s 22 where he passed to support players. After a couple of phases the ball came back to John who scored under the posts. Jordan Willmott converted – what is a hooker doing being able to kick !

One of the few fourrées into the Ensian’s 22 came from a rampaging run from one of Hammersmith and Fulham’s forwards running through some loose tackling although stopped just short of the try line, where the home team defended well, repulsing a number of attacks. Eventually, the sustained pressure led to a penalty. The ball was then passed down the line for a try becoming the first time that the Under 13 line had been breached this season. The conversion was missed.

The penultimate try came as a result of further effort by the forwards in winning ruck ball and the backs thanked them by again passing along the line, committing defenders until Ben on the wing went over for his second try. Conversion missed.

To finish the day it was appropriate that the ‘Player of the Day’ got his third and final try. After sustained pressure on Ensian’s try line, including a couple of penalties, the ball came loose and was kicked out and bounced on until it ended about 5 meters from the Hammersmith/Fulham line where the attackers knocked on. From the resultant scrum the ball came out to Shane who picked up to score. The last act of the game, unfortunately, was a missed conversion.

The final score of 70 to 5 reflects on a powerful performance by Redingensians’ under 13’s but to the visitor’s credit, they continued to try and fought to the end. Credit is also due to our loan players, who were switched every session, playing their best for what should have been their opposition.
