Wycombe keep 'Ensians at bay

Sunday 25th was a cold morning and an earlier than usual start for the U13's taking on High Wycombe. It has been a good couple of years since we last played Wycombe so we didn't really know what to expect and our expectations were possibly a little high after our big win the previous week.

We kicked off and took the game to Wycombe putting some pressure on their forwards. Play remained mainly in their half for some 10 minutes before Matt managed to sneak past their defence to score a nice try which was just a little too wide to convert. Play continued to see-saw with both teams keeping things even until our guard dropped and Wycombe drew level. From here on, the advantage swung in Wycombe's favour and our forwards seemed to lack some of their earlier determination and we lost the ball a little too often. Wycombe took advantage of this and scored to take themselves 12-5 ahead by half time.

We made a few changes in the break which helped briefly and we drew level at 12-12 with another Matt run after we won the ball from a scrum. Wycombe continued on the offensive running another two converted tries past us, one while we were napping a little. They did miss out in dramatic style when their right wing dropped the ball trying to get under the posts even though he was in In-goal and had put in a superb run from deep in our half, small mercy for us!

As the final whistle approached we pushed Wycombe back into their 22, up to their line and kept up the pressure; a couple of scrums later and the ball ended up with Matt who rounded off the match with a short run in to bring the final score to 17-22.

While we were missing a few of our usual players, the apparent lack of determination at points in the match saw a final score that could have so easily been a win, not a loss.
