Scrum-half looks back on an epic 20-year career

JEZ Flynn – the only player in Rams’ history to have racked up more than 100 league tries – has reflected on the great memories he enjoyed during his time at Old Bath Road.

Having crossed the whitewash nine times in friendlies in the 1995/96 season, Jez opened his account in the league during a 23-13 defeat at Corsham at the start of the following campaign.

And amazingly, almost 20 years later he scored his 101st at Redruth in National Two South – a stunning reminder of the club’s progress.

Reflecting on his place in the club’s history books, Jez said: “It means a lot to me - Rams has been a massive part of my life, so to score more than 100 tries is special.

“I have played at Rosslyn Park and Reading during my career, but Rams is my rugby club through and through.”

Looking back over his career, he continued: “I’m sorry I can’t remember the Corsham game, but I’m sure it was a blinder!

“It was great to score my 100th try against a local rival (Maidenhead in 2012), playing with and against some good friends.

“I scored two tries that day while playing on the wing, not my normal position of scrum-half.”

Some three years after clocking up his century, Jez came out of retirement to play in National Two for the first time – and he was delighted he did.

He revealed: “I have always liked staying fit and going to the gym and training, plus being a scrum-half and staying out of rucks and mauls helped me have a long career.

“I loved the day at Redruth. The weather was amazing, the game was free-flowing and it’s a great place to play, plus the social on the way home was fun!

“When Seb asked me to play, I had no hesitation in saying yes.”

Delving further into the memory bank, Jez said he had experienced some wonderful times – and had a special word for one of his teammates.

He beamed: “I always liked having a half-back partnership with Spike Chandler and I have many great memories at the club, from getting promoted, returning from Reading RFC and captaining the 1st XV.

“Touring to Rome and playing against New Zealand 7s, playing in three Dubai 7s finals and be luckily enough to still play now for charities with many ex-professionals and internationals rugby players is amazing.”

And while Rams have risen from Berks, Dorset and Wiltshire One at the start of Jez’s career to National One, he said its values remain the same.

He concluded: “It’s absolutely amazing how well the club have done recently, but one thing that hasn’t changed is it's still a family-orientated club.
