20 QUESTIONS WITH...ASH ROWDEN

Rich Ashton31 Oct 2020 - 13:15

From Premiership referee to Rams' waterboy!

Year joined: 1966 (Yes, I really am that old!)

Role: Waterboy / Player motivation

Best rugby memory: Professionally, finding out I was in the top 10 referees in the country in 1995.

At Rams, the National Two South promotion game at Clifton.

For the last 20 minutes I was trying not to cry because I knew how much it meant to people like Gary, Andy, Seb, Matt Maxwell and what an achievement it was for Rams.

Worst rugby memory: Finding out I was too old to referee international matches and any time I see a player – especially a Rams one – get a serious injury. I know it’s part of the game, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

Favourite food: Steak

Favourite drink: Water and lime cordial – that’s right, I don’t drink alcohol!

Favourite travel destination: Maldives

Favourite Rams try: I’ll have three because I’m greedy. Firstly, away in the first season in National Two South, Craig Nightingale running in from the halfway line at Old Elthamians. We looked certain to be relegated at Christmas, but that win inspired survival.

Secondly, Jak Rossiter at Henley in January 2019. I didn’t say it at the time, but I thought if we can come from a score behind with 10 minutes to go and win at the second-placed side, it’s going to take something remarkable not to get promoted.

Most recent, Henry Bird against Chinnor last season. I’d been away from the club for a while and they brought a team of ex-Championship players, so to win like that was amazing.

Favourite ever try: Gareth Edwards for the Barbarians against the All Blacks in 1973. I still get a tingle down my back when I listen to Cliff Morgan’s commentary!

Favourite ever player(s): There have been so many, but I was lucky enough to referee Jonny Wilkinson many times – a great player and so humble.

Favourite current player: Tom Vooght. I love his attitude and how he hates losing. Also like the way he winds up the opposition verbally, although I’d obviously never encourage that!

Other hobbies: Work

Favourite TV show: Only Fools and Horses, and Friends

Favourite musician: Level 42

Favourite song: Lessons in Love by Level 42

Favourite rugby ground(s): The Rec at Bath. It’s antiquated, but when your stood in the middle and look around there is stunning scenery and architecture. When you’re also doing something you love doing, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Second team: Northampton Saints

Favourite other sports: Everything!

One rule change you'd make in rugby: Reduce the pack to six players by getting rid of the flankers so you can create much more space on the pitch.

World Rugby will never allow it because they’d be accused of becoming rugby league, but you’d still have proper scrums, line-outs, mauls and a lot more tries.

Best thing about Rams RFC: Being involved with match days is the next best thing to being in the middle and I really feel part of the club. In fact, I probably go home more tired than when I was refereeing!

Having spent 21 years as a referee/assistant/TMO, when that ended I wasn’t sure what to do to replace it.

When you’ve been at the elite level in anything – business/sport/entertainment – you lose that adrenaline rush and it’s why some people go down the route of drugs or alcohol. Those aren’t for me!
