AXEL Kalling-Smith’s magnificent two-try effort in Saturday’s 38-28 home win against Cinderford has resulted in the super Swede being named National One Player of the Week.
Axel’s opener was a stunning break almost the length of the pitch, brushing aside four would-be defenders before racing away to score in clubhouse corner.
His second was arguably even better as a team try, the hosts winning a turnover on their own line which was cleared into the Cinderford by James McRae – off his wrong foot.
A superb chase forced another turnover before Ellis Jones’ majestic grubber kick found Ollie Cole to spin a pass wide for Axel to charge home from halfway, securing the try bonus-point and a big momentum shift.
The international star, who missed the Sale game while helping his country defeat Lithuania at the start of the month, has been in sensational form recently, grabbing another two tries in a man-of-the-match display against Taunton Titans and has racked up nine in his past seven Rams’ appearances.

Axel is the third Rams player to win the award this season, following James Baker's marvellous display at Chinnor in Week Two and Henry Bird's match-winning display in the 33-27 epic triumph at Cambridge in Round 18.
*Congratulations on a well-deserved award Axel!
