CHARLIE ROBSON: 'WE SHOWED WHAT WE'RE ABOUT AT THE END'

CHARLIE ROBSON: 'WE SHOWED WHAT WE'RE ABOUT AT THE END'

Rich Ashton29 Jan 2024 - 16:15

Hosts scored eight tries in fine National One win against Taunton!

MAN-OF-THE-MATCH Charlie Robson was delighted with the way his side hit top gear towards the end of the 52-17 National One home victory against Taunton Titans.

The two-try wing, who also had a hand in three other scores, looked dangerous every time he had the ball as part of an electric back line which ended with seven of Rams’ tries.

Having fallen behind to a converted Ollie Burrows effort, the hosts struck back with their three-quarters causing havoc – Henry Bird, Ollie Monye and George Makepeace-Cubitt touching down by the end of the first quarter.

Fraser Honey added the extras twice, but Louis Sinclair’s penalty for Titans meant it was 19-10 at the interval.

However, Honey’s perfectly judged cross-field kick set-up Robson for his first of the afternoon and the bonus-point, albeit Ben Oliphant-Thompson’s converted effort kept Taunton within nine points heading into the final quarter-of-an-hour.

That was as good as it got for the visitors, though, Rams hitting the afterburners with a sensational blitz started by a searing Robson break which sent fellow young gun Makepeace-Cubitt over for his second.

Another charge down the left was halted only long enough for Dan Swain to crash over against his old team, but Robson – who took his tally to six in seven first-team games this term – grabbed a deserved second before Ollie Cole crossed for the final try of an entertaining contest.

Star man Charlie reflected: “It was a great win and a good performance from the boys. We were a bit off in the first half, but later we found something and pushed on.

“(From 26-17) it was good to see the boys dig deep and show what we’re about in the final 15 minutes.

“Taunton are a tough opposition with some big boys, and full credit to them because they kept digging in despite the final score-line.”

Having crossed four times for the Titans in his last appearance a fortnight ago, Robson’s first was created by a delightful piece of skill from fly-half Honey, with the try-scorer admitting: “I think I was a bit lucky – it sat up nicely!

“I was about to kick it on, but it was a lovely bounce – a great kick (from Fraser).”

And having regained his place in the starting line-up following Zach Clow’s hamstring twinge, Charlie ended by revealing what a buzz it is to play in front of the Old Bath Road faithful.

He concluded: “The adrenaline when you get on the pitch is something else and especially at home, we feel like we can do some special things in front of our fans.

“Thank you so much to them for always coming down.”
