I think we have all been shocked by the unfolding revelations in the news media of historic child sex abuse in football.
Whilst the current focus is on football, who knows whether the focus may shift to rugby? I should like to think that we have nothing to fear. I guess we can never be sure.
As a club we have adopted the RFU’s child safeguarding guidelines and our coaches and regular helpers are DBS checked (DBS checks replace the old Criminal Records Bureau checks). We require our coaches to attend the RFU’s Play it Safe course to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities.
Just this week I have written to all coaches, managers, first aiders and helpers reminding them of their responsibilities, of the RFU’s requirements and guidelines as well as our own Child Safeguarding Policy. A copy is available on the club’s website to download but is also on our safeguarding noticeboard in the entrance corridor of the clubhouse.
We are committed to ensuring that your child can develop their full potential as a player and as a young person, enjoying their rugby and having fun in a safe environment.
Should at any time you have any concerns or worries, you may communicate in confidence with our Child Welfare (safeguarding ) officer Laura Lewis, laurajlewis@live.com or by phone: 07990 594610 or with me, wgornall-king@boyesturner.com or 07778 342137.
Thank you for reading this.
