As we look back to finally returning to the field of play against our neighbours and National One rivals Chinnor, we will take a look back over some classic encounters before May 22.
With the sides having contested 16 league matches, the one to miss out from our list is the 24-5 reverse back in South West One in January 2008, when Joe Duffelen’s try proved our only points.
No. 15: Chinnor 12-5 Rams (September 10, 2011)
In what would eventually culminate as our best season to date with a third-place finish in National Three South West, Rams suffered an early setback when going down to a narrow defeat in just the second game of the season.
It was the boot of Chinnor’s James Cathcart which proved pivotal in the opening stages, as he landed two penalties to make it 6-0 inside the first quarter.
Rams battled away into the wind, but another long-range Cathcart penalty just before the break made it 9-0 at the interval.
The boys in blue dominated the early part of the second half, but against the run of play, Stoop’s 62nd-minute drop-goal extended the lead further.
Straight from the restart Jevon Marsh gave Rams a glimmer of hope, though, scything though a number of would-be tacklers to score a marvellous try, and what would eventually be the only one of the game.
While he dotted down under the posts, a period of controversy followed as Shaun Brown’s initial conversion attempt was ordered to be re-taken after Chinnor had attempted to charge it down, but when they were again quickly off their line, he hooked his second effort wide.
In fairness to the home side, they were on the attack for the final 10 minutes, and ultimately were good value for the win in a season which ultimately ended in promotion for them via the play-offs.
