JEDD Paine’s outstanding campaign for the title-winning Centaurs secured him the Coaches’ Player of the Year trophy for the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Two South champions at the recent Players’ Dinner.
Having endured an injury-hit run, fit-again Jedd was superb throughout the season and his 14 tries played a pivotal part in helping the Mighty Cents complete a sensational 19 wins from their 20 league games – including 17 in a row after a Week Three loss to Slough.
The back row marked his return from long-term injury by crossing the whitewash in the opening 29-15 victory at Maidenhead, and he grabbed a second of the campaign to help his side to a 24-5 success against Tadley in Week Four.
A man-of-the-match performance and double against Newbury 2nd XV ensured back-to-back victories as the Mighty Cents beat their visitors 26-12, and Jedd again showed his eye for the line with two more in the 60-0 victory at Beaconsfield to take his tally to six.
Paine got the opener as the Centaurs beat Henley 3rd XV 33-7 in a cracking home Friday Night Lights affair, next on the scoresheet as he again showed his pace and power in racing over in the 35-14 success against Hungerford in what would be the last game before Christmas.
The turn of the year saw Jedd hit overdrive with a hat-trick in the 57-21 victory at Newbury to take him into double figures and beyond, and his 12th of a sterling season arrived in one of the team’s best performances of the campaign, the 53-7 floodlit scorcher at Henley.
With the title secured in the 36-3 win at Hungerford, Jedd ended the season with another double as a first-half blitz helped overcome a gutsy Abingdon side 47-24 on the final afternoon of a memorable campaign.
Jedd was sadly one of the Rams’ contingent who were unable to play for Berkshire Under 20s due to a change in competition regulations, but we hope he kicks on next season!
