Six different try-scorers help Rams progress from Round Two!

RAMS Colts moved into the third round of the National Cup with a fine 36-5 triumph at Beaconsfield.

The visitors started well and opened the scoring after five minutes when Ollie Ireland powered over from the edge of the 22, leaving a trail of would-be tacklers in his wake before Matt Cox converted for 7-0.

The lead was doubled five minutes later when a turnover by Jake Scott led to quick hands putting Paddy Brown away, the centre still with plenty to do but stepping inside the Beaconsfield cover defence to score near the posts.

Cox was again on target, but this seemed to rouse Beaconsfield who enjoyed some pressure of their own with hard carries through their forwards and direct running from their fly-half and inside-centre.

However, the Rams’ defence was up to the job and from a turnover on their line, and a breakout from their 22, they should have added to their score only for a poor pass to end a promising counter-attack.

From there the game became a little stop-start for the remainder of the half, albeit Rams remained in the ascendance and had two further scores ruled out due to forward passes.

With the slight slope to their favour after the break, the visitors soon got the scoreboard ticking over with further tries through Jayden Benham and then Luke Thorpe, one of these added to by Cox for 26-0.

Rams suffered a setback as scrum-half Louis Roumignac was forced off with an arm injury, but they continued playing with significant flair, adding two further tries from Jack Taylor and Nicolas Dumi – the latter also having a further score chalked off due to yet another forward pass.

Leading 36-0 with some 20 minutes to go, Rams were set fair, but just like the first half, the game became somewhat error-prone and played at a slower pace.

Beaconsfield, though, continued to press, their excellent line-out providing a steady stream of good ball, and eventually from a set penalty move they squeezed over in the corner for a consolation try.

Head coach Dave Cox, who highlighted Jayden Benham as man-of-the-match for his exceptional carrying, work rate at the breakdown and solid scrummaging, was pleased with the result though added: “There is a tinge of disappointment at the number of scoring chances we missed, but high praise to Beaconsfield who were resolute throughout, never threw the towel in and ended up having the final word.”

Rams play Marlborough in the last 32 of the competition next month.
