COLTS captain Aaron Preston is hoping his side’s togetherness can prove key in Sunday’s National Cup quarter-final at home to Ivybridge (2pm).
Rams have beaten Marlow, Beaconsfield, Marlborough and Old Patesians to reach the least eight stage, but have faced stern tests throughout and perhaps the toughest yet is expected when the Devonians arrive at Old Bath Road.
But Piggott School student Aaron believes his side are up for the challenge and said: “It’s a great feeling to be in a quarter-final and to make it to this stage as a team is exciting.
“We’ve had lots of challenges, but we’ve always stuck together even when we’ve been behind in games and found a way to come out on top.
“We’re sticking to what we’ve done so far and are aiming to make it our best performance of the season.”
The back row, who joined the club five years ago, was also keen to point out how important the switch to training twice a week has been – not just on the pitch but off it as well.
He explained: “The coaches push us, but it’s all for our good and development and we know we’ve still got a long way to go.
“The improvement in our fitness and skills has been great, but it’s also strengthened the bond as a team because we get to see each other much more.
“We’ve bonded so well throughout the year from the two age groups and different schools and colleges outside of Rams.
“In the past we didn’t get to see each other as much, so we’ve really benefitted – it’s awesome to know whatever the situation, everyone’s going to have your back through both the lows and highs.”
The come-from-behind 13-5 victory against Old Pats last time out was played in front of an impressive crowd of a couple of hundred supporters, and Aaron is hopeful the Ramily can again make the voices heard for a first quarter-final in 13 years.
He ended: “Hopefully it can be even bigger than last time and they get behind us, because it should be a really good game.”
Entry on Sunday is free with food and drink available.
