FORMER RAM JOHNNY IS GOING TO THE WORLD CUP

Rich Ashton22 Aug 2023 - 11:30

Welsh centre selected for France 2023!

FORMER Rams mini and junior Johnny Williams has been picked in the Wales squad for the World Cup.

The centre – who has scored against England and New Zealand in his six international caps to date – was part of Rams’ youth section before moving into the London Irish Academy.

Educated at The Forest School, Johnny represented England at the Under 20s World Cup in 2016, and played a non-cap game against the Barbarians three years later.

His career hit a bump in the road when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, but having overcome that and qualifying for Wales through his father Gareth, originally from Rhyl, he was called up by then head coach Wayne Pivac for the 2020 Autumn Nations Cup.

Debuting against Georgia in an 18-0 win, Johnny scored his first international try against England a week later.

And having overcome a couple more injuries in recent years, his efforts in a first Wales appearance in more than a year-and-a-half against Saturday were enough to earn a place in Warren Gatland’s 33-man squad for next month’s tournament in France.

Wales begin their campaign against Fiji on Sunday, September 10, with Australia, Georgia and Portugal also in Pool C.

*All at Rams would like to congratulate Johnny on his success and wish him the best of luck!
