GEORGE MAKES HIS ENGLAND UNDER 20S DEBUT

Rams teammates show their support as Wales are beaten in Bath!

GEORGE Makepeace-Cubitt made his England Under 20s debut as a second-half substitute in the hosts’ 28-7 bonus-point Six Nations win against Wales last night – with Rams teammates Max Hayman, Ollie Monye and Calum Scott among the supporters in Bath.

The teenager has been in sparkling club form in recent weeks, grabbing two tries against Taunton a fortnight ago, and was the first non-Premiership contracted player to be selected for more than a decade.

It was a winning start for the former Mini, who also spent time at Reading Abbey and attended Forest School, with England scoring four tries through Alex Wills, Archie McParland, Ioan Jones and Bath University student Scott Kirk – on home turf at The Recreation Ground – to make it two wins from two at the start of the competition.

George becomes the third male ex-junior to play for England in recent years, Johnny Williams helping the U20s win the World Cup in 2016 – later going onto become a full international for Wales – and Archie McArthur playing in last year’s Six Nations.

On the girls’ side, Lucy Simpson also represented her country in the U18s tournament last season.

Speaking about the achievement before yesterday’s game, forwards coach Owen Root said: “George has been so impressive since he came in following the unfortunate demise of London Irish, and that must have been a tough time for him.

“To bounce back and have the phone call must have been a fantastic moment for him and he fully deserved the opportunity.

“I love standing on the sidelines and listening to the opposing coaches panic about his footwork and his triple-threat game, which is hard to defend against, so from everyone at the club there’s huge pride and congratulations to him.”
