First woman to score at World Para Ice Hockey Championships!

HISTORY-MAKER Dani Watts has become the first woman to score in a World Para Ice Hockey Championships game – and also helped Great Britain win a gold medal.

Determined Dani – who suffered a life-altering injury while playing for the Sirens five years ago – wrote her name into the record books with her strike during GB’s 11-0 win against hosts Thailand on the opening day of the C-Pool competition.

The champions went onto beat both bronze medal winners France and Austria 7-0, before completing a perfect run with a 6-0 victory against runners-up Kazakhstan.

Dani had made her international debut at the Women’s World Challenge in Green Bay, USA, back in August, and will her team will now compete in B-Pool next season.

Reflecting on her achievements, Dani, who was one of four women in the squad, said: “Five years ago I was adamant my life was over let alone playing sport again, so this choked me and caught me off guard.

“Scoring my first goal in a GB jersey then singing the national anthem with the team was a moment I’ll cherish forever, and will be there in my memories for a lifetime!

“Us ladies have been accepted into the squad and I’m thankful for the support they give us – when you play with an exceptional team they help you achieve things you didn’t even have on your radar.

“I nearly didn’t play because my nerve pain has given me hell, but I’m glad I pushed another barrier.

She continued: “There are so many incredible women who play this sport, so it was a total shock to be told I was the first women to score in Pool championships and Para games.

“I want to thank GB Para Ice Hockey who have let us grow our game and we have the best coach who is always pushing the comfort zones.

“To those who have sponsored me and everyone at RAMS who have given me so much support in the past five years of my new journey – thank you!”

Ambitious as ever, Dani is excited by the future as she concluded: “There are some phenomenal female athletes and I’m hoping we can grow the women’s game and get our own championships.

“I hope to make the ones I love proud and here’s to the future in my sporting journey. I have the best home support from my supporting husband and super kids.”
