INTERNATIONAL ACES: JOHNNY WILLIAMS

Rich Ashton26 Jun 2024 - 11:30

Welsh centre has scored against the All Blacks!

AS we continue to serialise parts of the Centenary Book, we move onto those who have reached the pinnacle of representing their country.

Arguably Rams’ greatest export, Johnny joined the club as a Mini before progressing into the London Irish set-up.

He helped England Under 20s win the 2016 World Championship, scoring in the 39-17 semi-final win against South Africa and also impressing in the 45-21 triumph against Ireland which sealed the trophy.

Having made his debut as an 18-year-old, the inside centre was a rare shining light as London Irish were relegated at the end of the 2017/18 season, securing a move to Newcastle Falcons.

He scored a try for England in a non-capped win against the Barbarians in June, 2019, but later revealed he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer, taking some time out of the sport before returning the following January.

In July, 2020, Johnny moved to Scarlets, and qualifying for Wales through his father, Gareth, he was picked by national coach Wayne Pivac for the Autumn Nations Cup.

He made his debut against Georgia in the opening round before scoring his first senior international try in a 24-13 defeat to England a week later.

A year later, in October 2021, Johnny crossed the whitewash in defeat to New Zealand at the Principality Stadium.

He has gone onto win seven international caps despite suffering a couple of bad injuries.
