RAMS Under 14s began their season in spectacular fashion with an entertaining try-fest during a great set of games played in great spirit at neighbours Reading on Sunday.
The contest was contested as three 20-minute games in the sunshine, a far contrast from the day before, and the visitors started in blistering fashion as some strong attacking carries created four tries for Hayter (two), Asante and Croft, while tight defence allowed Reading to cross the white line just once.
Game Two saw the home side quickly score in the corner, but the Rams fight-back came first from a strong carry and try by Cummings, then full width passing for Austin to cross the line and quick feet and a strong run from Connor for a lovely try in his first game for the club.
Rams’ commitment to the cause was particularly evident as Burden completed a fantastic chase back after a penalty taken quickly by Reading which prevented the hosts from scoring again.
The third game saw tired legs for the away side as they conceded three tries in spite of some strong tackling, but just before the final whistle, Hayter crossed the line again.
A depleted U16s squad (pictured) toured the West Country for a three-match weekend.
In horrific conditions which preceded the first-team clash between Rams and Taunton, the away side battled wonderfully well and showed continued improvement from the week before despite eventually going down 24-0 with Titans adding a couple of late tries.
In a triangular 13-a-side event on Sunday, Rams drew 0-0 with Bath and 5-5 with hosts Cheddar Valley before the day was cut short due to injuries.
The U16s visit Thatcham this Sunday, while the Colts will hope to bounce back to winning ways against Henley in the National Cup.
Having lost 45-12 at Amersham & Chiltern last weekend, our youngsters will get the chance to play on the first-team pitch and any support would be welcomed (2pm).
The U15s had their game against cancelled against Bicester, but will be back in action at Old Rutlishians on Sunday.
Elsewhere, the U13s sent two sides to Bracknell and shared the spoils across the four closely-contested games which were played.
On the girls side of things, all three teams (U18, U15 and U13) all travel to Bracknell this Sunday.
