MAGNIFICENT MCRAE IS PLAYERS' PLAYER OF THE SEASON

Versatile back row scoops top gong!

MAGNIFICENT James McRae was crowned Rams’ Players’ Player of the Year following an outstanding National One campaign.

The versatile back row – who started on both flanks and at No. 8 throughout the season – took the league by storm as he racked up 10 tries in his 21 appearances.

Having missed the seasonal opener against Esher, James grabbed his first try during the Friday Night Lights triumph at Chinnor, and having played in the victories at home to Hull and Darlington Mowden Park, he gave a taste of what was to come with a terrific try against Cambridge.

Picking the ball up from the base of a ruck some 25 metres out, the Eton College teacher showed the electric turn of pace which became his trademark, side-stepping former Ram Steffan James before touching down under the posts.

He repeated the trick in more spectacular fashion seven days later, galloping away from halfway during the brilliant 29-21 triumph at Rosslyn Park.

Having missed the Birmingham Moseley game, James returned to the side at No. 8 at Leeds Tykes, making it four tries in six games as he dotted down at the back of a powerful scrum.

Having helped the side defeat Plymouth, the former Exeter Chief was man-of-the-match and again on the scoresheet as Rams set a club record 11th straight win to start the season at Taunton Titans, also featuring in the defeats to Sale and at Cinderford where he played the second half at inside centre.

Away for the trip to Hull after Christmas, James missed only one more game – Chinnor under the lights at Old Bath Road for the rest of the campaign.

One of his stand-out performances came in a tour de force display in the stunning 33-27 come-from-behind success at Cambridge – a game in which he made a remarkable 29 carries – while he rediscovered his nose for the try-line at the back end of the campaign.

His sixth of the season came against Leeds before a double in the 59-21 victory against Titans, another long-range effort coming at Sale when his 60-metre interception score put the visitors in front.

James took his tally into double figures in the final home game against Cinderford, while it was his break which set-up Axel Kalling-Smith for the opener at Esher on the last day of the season.

Axel, meanwhile, came second in the vote, while 17-try hooker Max Hayman rounded out the podium places.

*Congratulations James on a superb season!
