MATCH PREVIEW: SEB EXPECTS ANOTHER ROSSLYN ROCK CLASSIC

MATCH PREVIEW: SEB EXPECTS ANOTHER ROSSLYN ROCK CLASSIC

Rich Ashton13 Dec 2024 - 16:30

'I still remember the excitement of the first time we played them!'

SEB Reynolds expects another block-buster National One encounter when Rams visit fourth-placed Rosslyn Park tomorrow (3pm).

The two sides have built up an intense rivalry since the Berkshire men first took on their opponents back in November, 2019.

A little more than five years later the duo go head-to-head again, with another big crowd and big atmosphere expected for the hosts’ Christmas fixture at The Rock.

And the Director of Rugby started: “We’ve been playing Rosslyn Park for many years now and they’re always good games – I still remember the excitement of the first time at home.

“Coming up into National One and facing the likes of Rosslyn Park, Blackheath, Richmond, going to these London clubs is what the league is about and they’re fantastic away trips for our fans.”

Prior to last week’s loss at Sedgley Park the Londoners had lost only one of their past seven games, a one-point, last-play reverse at Birmingham Moseley, and Seb said the recent defeat can be written off while also lauding the strength of their squad and the chance to catch up with a former National One-winning Ram.

He explained: “I watched Sedgley’s attempted conversion in the second half and the ball almost goes backwards, so they were very interesting conditions!

“Rosslyn Park have scored a lot of points this year, if they get on the front foot they’ve got a very free-flowing attack, so it’s something we’ve got to look out for.

“They’ve always been able to recruit players who’ve been at a high level, it’s one of the pulls of being in London and moving into a career while also being at a good rugby club, while they’ve also got one of our former players in Steffan James, so it will be great to see him and it’s always a top game with these guys.”

Rams make three changes themselves to the side which went down 7-5 to Richmond, Ant Marris and Ryan Lomas starting at prop as Tomek Pozniak comes back into the starting line-up, Axel Kalling-Smith moving to outside centre.

Seb continued: “Poz was very unfortunate to miss out last week, he’s been a fantastic addition to the side, and with him back in Axel switches to 13 which maybe his most natural position, albeit he’s so good across the back line.”

And while Rams have suffered disappointment in their past two games with Richmond and Rotherham Titans – both in horrific weather conditions – Seb is confident they can turn a corner while also joking: “(Despite the dry forecast) I’m sure it will bucket it down again now!

“But what’s great about an artificial pitch is it can rain two hours before kick-off yet then it dries up and you can have fast rugby. Hopefully it does stay dry and both teams can produce another exciting game.”

Previous trips to one of English rugby’s most prestigious clubs have brought a huge following from the travelling Ramily, and the head coach ended by hoping to make their weekend as he concluded: “I can’t reiterate enough the support and love the group felt last Friday – I showed the players the clip in the week of the try Mikey Duda scored and you can just hear the crowd noise.

“It’s something we wanted to produce a bit more of last Friday, maybe that we let people down a little bit, but in terms of the physical efforts in the game, they were fantastic.

“It was a two-point game which could have gone either way, and rugby isn’t all about 33-32 type fixtures, sometimes attritional 7-5 matches are just as exciting – it’s unfortunate we couldn’t get the win, but the crowd were amazing and if you’re travelling into London to support the boys, they’d love to see you there.

“We’ve got two games before Christmas and want to see as many of the Ramily as possible.”
