MATCH REPORT: RAMS START WITH A PAIR OF WINS

Rich Ashton12 Aug 2023 - 17:00

Quartey and Clow at the double as Bracknell and Aberavon beaten!

RAMS began their pre-season with two hard-fought victories against Bracknell (33-12) and Aberavon (38-19).

After a tepid opening 15 minutes, Rams Blues opened the scoring in the first game as a lovely sidestep from Tom Humberstone resulted in the centre crossing the whitewash, Rowan Grundy adding the extras.

Things got better shortly afterwards as prop Ryan Lomas cut a beautiful line to dot down, Grundy again on target before the visitors hit back with a fine score of their own.

A cross-field kick was flipped back inside for Ken Hodgson to register his side’s first points, Jake Findlay landing the conversion to halve the deficit before the break.

A much-changed Rams side grabbed the first score of the second period, Cam George’s well-timed pass creating space for debutant Karl Quartey to bag his first try for the club.

George made no mistake for 21-7, and a second for Quartey made the game seemingly safe.

However, Bracknell struck back with a fine move finished by Will Field, albeit the hosts were to have the final say as Mikey Annells snared an interception inside his own 22 before racing home from some 80 metres out, George adding the extras with the final kick of the game.

In the second contest it was Aberavon who took first blood against the Reds, a powerful scrum securing a penalty try as Rams were shoved back behind their line.

However, props Paddy Harris and Paul Englezos impressed from then on against a strong and experienced opposition front row, their side almost equalising when Dan Swain was held up over the line.

They did level up, though, as debutant Fraser Honey added the extras to his own smart score, albeit the Welshmen went back in front on the stroke of half-time as Rhys Thomas crossed on the right.

It was Rams who struck first in the second period, however, a lovely dart from replacement fly-half Ollie Monye setting up Zach Clow to cross.

Honey’s conversion made it 14-12, but the visitors hit back with a seven-pointer of their own, Iwan Temblett the try-scorer, but a marvellous no-look Monye inside ball sent Mike Hoyt over for an effort added to by Grundy.

Clow doubled his tally with a sensational second, the full-back beating several men for a 65-metre cracker, and with Grundy again on target, Rams had a nine-point lead.

Their fifth of the contest came shortly after, a smart line-out move seeing Max Hayman receive a short pass from Ross Crame to go over, and the icing on the proverbial cake was added right at the death as Grundy finished a beautiful free-flowing team move for the final points of an entertaining afternoon.
