MATCH REPORT: SIX-TRY RAMS TRIUMPH AT CHINNOR

Rich Ashton26 Aug 2024 - 16:22

Impressive performance sees neighbours beaten at Kingsey Road!

RAMS produced some flashes of magic as they ended pre-season with a six-try, 42-28 success at neighbours Chinnor.

Things began disastrously for the visitors as they fell behind within five minutes, Alun Walker riding a maul over the line before Nathan Chamberlain added the extras.

Rams replied swiftly, however, and levelled matters with a cracking try – Ed Hoadley’s perfectly weighted pass sending Zach Clow and then Nile Dacres down the left, the latter then unselfishly freeing Ellis Jones for a score on the left.

Fraser Honey struck a fine touchline conversion, and his side had another chance shortly after when debutant Tomek Pozniak broke down the right, his chip ahead fielded 10 metres out.

Yet they did hit the front soon after, a spell of concerted pressure ending with Andrew Lamb setting-up Clow for a try again added to by Honey.

Pozniak did collect his score to extend the lead, Max Hayman grabbing a loose ball before sending the Polish international away from 65 metres out.

An easy conversion followed, and Rams were motoring as they scored a fourth try almost immediately.

That man Honey’s perfect dink was hoovered up by Lamb, the full back then kicking ahead for Clow to win the foot race and dot down.

The extras made it 28-7, although Chinnor gave themselves a lifeline at the end of the first period, James Bourton crossing from close range before Chamberlain converted.

It was Rams who started the second period – the game played across 30, 30 and 20 minute sections – brighter, Honey’s majestic cross-field kick caught at full tilt by captain Max Hayman, the hooker crossing for a wonderful score.

Another successful kick put Rams 35-14 up, albeit Chinnor replied when Luke Carter spotted a gap near the line, the scrum-half sniping under the posts before Chamberlain maintained his perfect record.

Rams responded, however, picking up a sixth try at the end of the stanza, Clow racing 50 metres down the right before an inside ball sent Olise Monye over to the right of the uprights.

Honey made it six from six and 42-21, Clow then having to make a magnificent try-saving tackle to kick-off the third period.

Chances came and went at both ends, Chinnor scoring through Henry Pearson, the kick by Nick Smith, but it was Rams who nearly had the last word as Axel Kalling-Smith was just unable to get on a Stone grubber/

It mattered not, though, as full time was called to send Rams away in upbeat spirits ahead of the National One opener at home to Darlington Mowden Park on Saturday, September 7 (3pm).
