RAMS’ Returning Students put in a valiant effort but ultimately went down 21-5 in the Chinnor mud.
The annual December fixture was again well supported with both sides naming large squads, the two teams cancelling each other out as they battled tough conditions during the opening quarter.
It was Chinnor who hit the front, however, patiently going through the phases before eventually barrelling over from close range for a converted score.
With the rain continuing to fall and the pitch getting heavier, things got worse for Rams as an interception score was added to for 14-0 after 23 minutes.
Some early Christmas cards were then dished out as the visitors were reduced to 13 men, their opponents to 14 following a trio of sin-binnings.
Having regained their full quota Rams were again reduced 14 after a high tackle, Chinnor grabbing a third converted try just after the hour mark.
Rams refused to battle in increasingly dreadful conditions, and gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Louis Roumignac crossed the whitewash.
However, with the ball like a bar of soap and the pitch a mud bath, the defences remained on top as Chinnor ran out worthy winners.
Students’ manager Adrian Ivory remained upbeat following his first night in the role, admitting: “It wasn’t the result we wanted, but despite the weather it was still a very good evening.
“It’s great to have the guys come back together and we look forward to the rematch at Easter.”
