Debutant's try kick-started comeback win against Richmond!

MAGNIFICENT Mikey Duda said the crowd’s reaction after his debut try against Richmond was ‘one of the best feelings I’ve ever had’.

The teenage flanker produced an all-action display throughout his maiden National One appearance, helping Rams overturn an 8-0 half-time deficit to run out 19-13 winners at Old Bath Road.

Having made a couple of eye-catching early tackles Mikey bore the brunt of the hosts pulling down a maul, his yellow card followed by a Lewis Dennett penalty and Callum Torpey try.

But the debutant made amends at the start of the second period, showing great pace off a maul before stretching over the line for a score added to by captain Fraser Honey.

Torpey’s second put Richmond six points clear, but Rams hit back and secured victory thanks to a Max Hayman effort and Charlie Robson’s 10th of the campaign, Honey adding to the latter with a cracking touchline conversion.

Having joined Rams from neighbours Reading Abbey in the summer of 2022, Mikey started in the Dragon’s Teeth (4th XV) before going onto be Centaurs’ (3rd XV) Best Newcomer and Tackling Trophy winner last term.

His progress continued as he impressed on the pre-season tour to Ireland, and having been excellent for the Titans all campaign, he continued his remarkable development with a fine performance against Richmond.

Looking back at his time at Rams so far and Saturday’s game, he began: “From day one everyone has been so welcoming, and it was the same with the first team.

“It was a pleasure to be involved and all the guys made me feel comfortable despite it being my first game.

“In the week I did feel a bit nervous, but when I got to the ground, I felt a lot more excitement and couldn’t wait to get on the pitch and hit some people.

“I tried to do what I do, put the shots in, and it was a great feeling to play.”

Describing the moment he got Rams back into the contest with his debut try, the back row continued: “It was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had, everyone was cheering and it was so special.

“It’s the biggest crowd I’ve played in front of by miles, and I knew it was the biggest game I’ve played in so far – I was so up for it and I think I did ok for a first time.

“And thank you to the crowd. They spurred us on and gave us the extra energy to keep going and get the win.”
