THE top four in National One all collected bonus-point wins as table-topping Caldy maintained their lead with a hard-fought 28-13 victory at Leeds Tykes.
The Wirral-based side, who have only lost to second-placed Rosslyn Park in their past 21 matches, overcame their latest potential banana skin with another five-point victory to keep their title dreams alive.
A Ben Jones try put Caldy in front early on, and after a Charlie Venables penalty cut the gap, two before the break from the league’s top scorer Jones made it 11-3 to the visitors at the break.
Will Hardwick’s try for Leeds cut the deficit to three for Tykes, but the league leaders then took control and wrapped up their bonus-point as Joe Murray, Adam Aigbokhae and Nick Royle all touched down, Jones with another conversion.
Harry Jukes went over for a late consolation for Leeds, but Caldy closed the game out easily.
Park, meanwhile, remain arguably the title favourites following a 47-14 demolition of Birmingham Moseley, leaving them two points behind Caldy but with a game in hand.
The Londoners raced into a 28-0 lead and had the bonus secured as they scored at a point-per-minute thanks to tries from Sam Garvey, Henry Robinson, Benji Marfo and Brandon Jackson, Craig Holland slotting all four conversions.
Dan Lewis added the extras to a Fyn Brown try before the break for Mose, but Holland was again on target after Josh Addams dotted down early in the second half to restore the 28-point lead.
Jackson’s second made it 40-7, and while substitute Mason Tonks went over for a try converted by Lewis, Park had the final word when Holland crossed the whitewash and Luc Smith added the extras.
Third-placed Sale are also well and truly in the hunt after recording an eighth straight win with a 36-14 home triumph against Darlington Mowden Park.
Ex-Premiership stars Tom Brady and Fergus Mulchrone both touched down along with Stone Priestley-Nagle before the break, and with last week’s Rams-slayer James Robins adding two conversions, the hosts led 19-0 at the interval.
The second half proved to be the Joe Carpenter show for the home side, the Sale Sharks loanee grabbing a hat-trick around DMP touchdowns from George Shannon and replacement Euan McKirdy, Oscar Yarndell converting both for Mowden Park.
Fourth-placed Cambridge put another nail in the relegation coffin of Tonbridge Juddians with a dominant 59-10 victory at The Slade.
A third-minute Joe Green try converted by Harry Johnston gave the visitors the lead, Tom White cutting the gap to four points with a penalty at the start of the second quarter.
However, Cambridge established a 21-3 lead by the break as Johnston added the extras to a pair of Joe Tarrant tries, and they wrapped up the bonus-point when Green went over again, Lawrence Rayner this time converting.
White converted his own try to give TJs hope, but after Perry Parker was sent off, Cambridge ran riot.
Skipper George Bretag-Norris touched down before Green and Tarrant both completed their hat-tricks, and after Darryl Veenendaal also crossed the whitewash, Rayner slotted a penalty with the last play of the game to go alongside his four last-quarter conversions.
Cinderford climbed to fifth with a 20-15 success at Bishop’s Stortford.
A George Boulton try and eight points from the boot of Reece Boughton (two penalties and a conversion) gave the Foresters an 13-0 half-time lead, trimmed early in the second period by an Alfie Orchard penalty.
Stortford skipper Sam Winter then went over and Orchard added the extras to make it 13-10, but Cindy re-established control when Sam Baker touched down at the back of a maul.
Boughton was again on target for 20-10, but the hosts responded immediately with Josh Stannard crossing the whitewash.
However, a pointless final 20 minutes left the Forest of Dean visitors with victory.
Chinnor warmed up for their Friday Night Lights trip to Old Bath Road with a second successive victory as they triumphed 19-12 at Plymouth Albion.
James Bourton converted a Will Ryan try at the start of the second quarter to give the Thame men a 7-0 interval lead, and while Alex Ducker crossed for the hosts to reduce the deficit, Luke Carter kicked a penalty before Bourton added two more to make it 16-5.
Plymouth gave themselves hope as Tom Putt added the extras to a James Salter score with 13 minutes remaining, but a third Bourton penalty with time running out secure the win for Chinnor.
Taunton Titans won an epic shoot-out 43-28 against Blackheath in the latest points-fest at Veritas Park.
The Somerset side have been one of the great entertainers in their maiden season at Level Three, and despite falling behind to a second-minute try from Markus Burcham, converted by Jake Hennessey, they levelled matters as Jack Walsh added the extras to a Connor Banks touchdown.
Hennessey converted Nick Foster’s try to put Club back in front, but back row duo Charlie Wright and Sam Prior went over for Taunton in reply.
Walsh converted the latter to make it 19-14, only for Hennessey’s conversion of a Dan Hiscocks try to have Blackheath two points up at the break.
However, Titans came flying out the traps at the start of the second period as Alex Spurdle and wing Oli Down touched down, Walsh converting the latter for 31-21, and when Wright completed his double, it was 36-21 with 12 minutes remaining.
Club ensured they’d take at least a try bonus away when Howard Packham went over with six minutes on the clock, Hennessey making it four conversions from four, but their hopes of snatching a key win were ended when Ratu Vakalutukali dotted down for Walsh to convert.
