CAMBRIDGE put the National One title destiny in their own hands as they consigned Leeds Tykes to relegation with a ruthless 75-10 home win.
The third-placed side ran in 11 tries during a dominant display, taking them five points behind leaders Rams with a game in hand – but if they win their final three matches with a bonus-point at Hull, Plymouth and at home to Birmingham Moseley they will be guaranteed promotion on fewer losses.
Cambridge took control of the Leeds game from the off, racing 35-0 up inside 26 minutes as Ben Brownlie and Anthony Maka both touched down twice along with Tom Hoppe, Steffan James converting all five scores.
Tighe Maxwell-Whiteley got Tykes off the mark before the break, but the one-way traffic continued in the second period as the league’s leading scorer, Kwaku Asiedu, went over before Brownlie completed his hat-trick.
James continued his perfect run from the tee before a penalty try made it 56-5, Asiedu adding two more for a treble which puts him on 27 tries for the campaign.
Matt Arden converted the second and repeated the trick after Willie Priestley went over, Alex Pleasants’ injury-time effort for Leeds barely registering as a consolation.
Taunton Titans gave their survival hopes a boost with an amazing 57-26 home win against Rosslyn Park, the hosts scoring 35 unanswered points to run away with victory.
The Somerset men went 10-0 up as George Worboys added the extras to an early Alex Rodd score before landing a penalty, only for a quick-fire double from Benji Marfo and Luc Smith to give Park the advantage after the latter converted both.
An Isaac Dalton effort nudged Titans back in front, but Charlie Piper got the Londoners back in front 19-15 at the interval.
Ratu Vakalutukali crossed immediately at the start of the second period, Worboys on target, before Smith converted Henry Robinson’s try for the visitors.
However, Park failed to score in the final 36 minutes as Taunton ran wild, Worboys with five conversions after Charlie Wright and Frankie Dart touched down, Rodd doubled his tally and 18-year-old man-of-the-match debutant Noah Fenton collected a spectacular brace in the final quarter-of-an-hour.
Plymouth Albion climbed back up to fifth as they ran out 33-24 winners in another high-scoring encounter at home to Birmingham Moseley.
Phil Jones converted tries from Jeremy Toa and Craig Duncan to put the hosts 14-0 up, only for Jacob Cusick and Dan Lewis to hit back for Mose, the latter adding to the first score.
Leading 14-12 at the interval, Toa doubled his tally before Charlie Groves sealed the bonus-point for Albion, Jones on target after both for 28-12.
Lewis slotted after Matt Marsh touched down for Birmingham, but Jake Clemson’s try made it 33-19 and meant Cusick’s second was only a consolation.
Cinderford won an epic shoot-out 43-34 against visitors Darlington Mowden Park.
Mikey Austin added the extras to his own first-minute score before Danny Hodge rode over from a maul for 12-0 to the Foresters, DMP striking back with a Harry Hadfield try and a Louie Johnson conversion and penalty.
Jamie Forester – added to by Austin – and Hadfield, exchanged scores to leave Cindy 19-15 up at the break.
It was the hosts who surged clear, however, Nathan Taylor dotting down twice and Austin doubling his tally as well as slotting twice for 38-15.
DMP rallied, though, scoring 19 unanswered points of their own through tries from Ali Ledingham, Ben Frankland a hat-trick hero Hadfield, the former with two kicks.
Cinderford had the final word, however, Morgan Adderly-Jones with their seventh try to seal the deal.
Chinnor secured their National One status for the 2023/24 season with a bonus-point 41-15 home win against bottom side Hull.
Tom Price converted a second-minute Will Cave try to put the hosts in front, Timoci Waqadau cutting the gap on 15 minutes.
Price repeated the trick after Reece Marshall dotted down, but Hull replied almost immediately with Reece Dean adding the extras to a Steve Johnson effort.
But Cave’s effort, again converted, and a Kieran Goss try gave the home side a 26-12 lead at the break.
A Dean penalty proved to be Hull’s last points, Cave completing his hat-trick before Jason Worrall and James Down also crossed the whitewash to secure a fourth win in five games for the Thame men.
Esher kept their heads up above the relegation trapdoor – albeit there are rumours swirling only the bottom two may go down – with a fine 31-13 win against visitors Bishop’s Stortford.
Connor Lloyd put Stortford in front with an early penalty, before a Harri Lang try and two three-pointers from Sam Morley put the Eees 11-3 up.
Alex Rayment and Chris Smith crossed for the visitors in the final five minutes of the first half, but they failed to add to a 13-11 interval lead.
Morley’s third penalty nudge Esher back in front, and he added another after converting a Ben Atkins try for 24-13 after 54 minutes.
The rest of the second period became something of a stalemate, Morley making it 16 individual points as he added the extras to a late Jack Owlett try to keep Esher two points clear of Taunton with a pair of games to go for both.
