Chinnor crowned champions as Taunton, Leicester and Stortford boost survival hopes!

CHINNOR wrapped up the National One title in style with a resounding 52-0 victory at Birmingham Moseley.

Three tries in five minutes at the end of the first quarter, scored by Alun Walker, Ollie Curry and Grant Hughes, put the visitors in front, two George Worboys conversions making it 19-0.

Chinnor then put their foot down with three more seven-pointers before the break – Hughes doubling his tally as Morgan Passman and Worboys also crossed the whitewash – and rounded out a sixth straight win with the latter collecting a second and Will Feeney finishing the job.

Taunton Titans moved off the foot of the table with a third win in a row, a thrilling 37-31 home success against new basement side Cinderford.

A Louis Sinclair penalty gave the hosts an early lead, only for Cindy to hit back through Tom Samak and Sam Smith, Jake Shortland converting both for 14-3.

Will Vaughan went over for Taunton, Sinclair with the extras, before a Nathan Taylor score for the Foresters.

A second Sinclair penalty and his conversion of a Frankie Dart try gave Titans a 20-19 half-time lead, and they pulled clear in the third quarter as Oscar Stewart and Sam Leworthy touched down and Sinclair added seven more points with the boot.

Cinderford, though, rallied with two tries in the final five minutes, Mike Wilcox and Taylor the scorers as they salvaged what could yet be two key bonus-points.

A wonderful second-half display from Leicester Lions helped them to a 43-10 home win against Darlington Mowden Park, a result which pushes the hosts four points clear of the drop zone.

An Ollie Taylor try for Lions was cancelled out by Ben Frankland, but Nick Cairns’ effort in first-half injury-time, converted by Dan Lewis, gave Leicester a 12-5 interval lead.

Joey Patrick, Toby Cousins, Jamel Hamilton and Lewis then went over, the latter with two conversions, as the hosts ran riot, Darlington gaining a consolation through Nathan Greenwood before Lewis had the final say with his second and a kick which took his personal points tally to 18.

Bishop’s Stortford took a huge step towards safety with a battling 22-19 home triumph against Sale.

The visitors led 12-0 at half-time thank to tries from Ben Carlile and Will Hitchen, James Robins adding to the first, but Stortford rallied thanks to Alex Rayment and James Ayrton, Tom Walker’s conversion levelling matters.

Sale went back in front as Will Riley touched down, Robins on target, but a second from Rayment was added to by Walker, the fly-half’s late penalty then proving the match-winner.

All this leaves Stortford on 51 points, Leicester 50, Taunton 47 and Cinderford 46 ahead of a final day which sees the bottom side host Bishop’s, Lions travel to Sale and Taunton to Blackheath.

Third-placed Rosslyn Park played out a cracking 29-29 draw in their London derby with visitors Blackheath.

Tom Stanton crossed in the opening minute for Park, Club hitting back with a Leo Fielding penalty before Jordan Martin’s try, converted by Max Craven, gave the hosts a 12-3 advantage at the break.

A Blackheath blitz score three tries in seven minutes, Leo Fielding, Billy Harding and Ben Charnock the men to get the ball down, and with Ffitch slotting two kicks, it was 22-12.
Rosslyn replied, however, with Craven on target after Joe Luca Smith and Benji Marfo went over, a penalty in between making it a seven-point game.

Club, though, snatched a share of the spoils as former Ram Andrew Denham scored in the final minute, Ffitch landing the crucial conversion.

Sedgley Park made it back-to-back home wins with a high-scoring 47-29 triumph against fourth-placed Plymouth Albion.

A whirlwind opening half-hour saw Tigers build up a 23-0 lead, Warren Seals kicking two penalties and a conversion as Alex Wills bagged a brace and Andy Riley touched down.

Paul Brown-Bampoe and Tom Putt got Albion on the board before half-time, but Sedge moved further in front as Adam Mallinson secured their bonus-point, Seals with the extras and a penalty for 33-10.

Putt converted tries from Callum Davies and Jack Oulton to give the visitors hope, but Seals was again on point following Mallinson’s second.

Harry Wilkinson cut the gap for Plymouth, but Tigers had the final word, Danny Maher going over before Seals completed the scoring.

Meanwhile, Rams battled to a 19-13 victory against Richmond, keeping the runners-up in the hunt for a 100-point haul for the second consecutive season.
