LEICESTER Lions secured survival on the final day for the second successive season as they overcame visitors Bishop’s Stortford 38-29.
Luke Bouchier added to an early Jamel Hamilton score before Stortford levelled matters through Declan Murphy and Mike Cooke, Lions regaining the lead through a converted Joe Brock effort.
Chris Smith crossed for the away side before Bouchier’s five-pointer made it 19-12 at the break, Lions extending their advantage with a converted Hamilton second.
Isaac Bell’s score cut the gap to nine before Ollie Taylor went over for Lions, the ebb-and-flow nature of the contest continuing as David Hayes landed following Alex Rayment’s try.
However, Charlie Bemand dotted down for a converted try to restore Lions’ 14-point lead, and despite Rayment doubling up, Leicester sealed a third campaign at Level Three.
Victory meant Esher’s spirited 55-24 home success against Sedgley Park was not enough to stop them falling to an immediate relegation following last term’s National Two East triumph, while champions Richmond ended the season in style with a 40-26 home victory against Blackheath in the oldest rugby fixture in the world.
The visitors hit the front as Archie Holland touched down for a score added to by Tom Ffitch, only for ‘Mond to reply via Chris Freeman, Sam Dardis and Sam Smith, a trio of Callum Grieve kicks making it 21-7 at the break.
An Oskar Hirskyj-Douglas effort cut the gap, but Richmond ensured a winning finale to a superb campaign as Jake Monson, Smith and Tololima Savaiinaea went over, Grieve with two more kicks for 40-12 before Club snatched a late bonus-point as Hirskyj-Douglas grabbed a second and Will Davis the last.
Ruthless Rosslyn Park smashed Rotherham Titans 56-26 in their runners-up shoot-out.
The Londoners took an early 14-0 lead as Josh Bragman converted tries from Jasper Cameron and Charlie Walker, the visitors equalising thanks to Ronnie du Randt and John Okafor plus a brace of Lloyd Hayes nudges.
An inspired burst before the break saw the hosts regain control, Cameron, Tom Stanton and Ali Wade all over for converted scores and 35-14.
Okafor doubled up early in the second stanza , Hayes again on target, but Charlie Mulchrone’s seven-pointer made it 42-21 to Park.
A Ben Wright try earned Titans a bonus, but Park finished things in fine fashion as Cameron completed his hat-trick and Tom Bell touched down, Bragman and Steffan James with a kick apiece to complete the scoring.
Plymouth Albion finished in fourth after a fine 46-26 victory at Sale FC, overcoming a sensational start from the Dogs which saw James Robins convert an opening-minute Mark Dixon try.
A Bobby Wigginton brace nudged Albion in front, Frankie Dart adding to the second, before a Joe Green seven-pointer put the hosts back in front.
Plymouth, though, added two more scores from Shea Cornish and Archie Hill, plus a Dart kick, for 24-14 before Sale skipper Andy Hughes touched down and Robins landed at the end of the opening period.
Dart slotted after his own touchdown and it was 39-21 following an Ethan Burger try and Dart penalty, Sale keeping themselves alive as Sean Street crossed.
But it was the Devonians who had the final word, Wigginton completing his treble before Dart landed the Coup de Grace.
Sale’s reverse allowed Birmingham Moseley to end in the top half after their 47-26 triumph at Dings Crusaders.
The away side raced into a 21-0 lead after Aquile Smith and Ollie Stedman (two) touched down, Tommy Taylor adding to all the scores.
Dings got on the board as Jamie Elswood converted a Max Rivers effort, but Mose wrapped up the bonus-point before the break as Ethan Priest crossed.
Tuoyo Egodo’s converted try extended the lead before Kofi Cripps replied for Dings, the visitors’ Santiago Edwards then crossing as Birmingham went 40-14 in front.
Taylor added to his own try to further the advantage, leaving a maul score and a 50-metre cracker from Ezra Caven as mere late consolations for Crusaders.
