NATIONAL ONE ROUND-UP - WEEK 27

Rich Ashton10 Apr 2022 - 17:00

Caldy two games from glory as Sale, Cambridge, Chinnor, DMP and TJs also shine!

A FABULOUS 15th consecutive win for Caldy leaves them just two games from a stunning title success after they overcame Bishop’s Stortford 31-18 at Paton Field.

An Alfie Orchard penalty gave Storts the lead, but the table-toppers hit back with two quick-fire tries from Nick Royle and Elliot Gourlay, Ben Jones converting for 14-3.

Josh Stannard crossed twice for Bishop’s, the first added to by Orchard, but Jones was again on target after Mikey Barlow touched down.

A Tom Walker penalty reduced the deficit to 21-18 at the break, but final-quarter scores from Adam Aigbokhae and Gourlay increased the Wirral-based side’s hopes of back-to-back promotions.

Second-placed Sale kept their dreams alive, however, with a seven-try 43-24 victory at Birmingham Moseley, their 10th win on the spin.

Reikiti Maasi opened the scoring for Mose before Sale hit back through Jordan Tebbatt, James Robins slotting the conversion to give his side the advantage.

Visiting skipper Andy Hughes touched down for 12-5, before Mason Tonks for Birmingham and Fergus Mulchrone exchanged tries to leave Sale 17-10 up at the break.

The title-chasers ran riot in the third quarter as Robins added the extras to scores from Matt Bradley, Dan Birchall and Nev Edwards, before a Dan Lewis conversion of Tonks’ second reduced the gap to 38-17.

But a second Tebbatt score put the game to bed with 14 minutes remaining, Birmingham claiming a try bonus through Jacques Le Roux’s late effort, Lewis adding the extras.

Cambridge climbed to third and are ready to swoop if Caldy or Sale make any mistakes following a 38-24 home win against Taunton Titans.

The Blood & Sand took the lead as Jake McCloud crossed the whitewash, Harry Johnston converting, albeit Titans replied through a Shai Bonnick touchdown.

Yet Cambridge took complete control as Will Wand, Ben Brownlie and Andrew Henderson touched down to seal the bonus-point just after the half-hour mark, Johnston converting two for 26-5.

The gap was reduced just before the break as Connor Banks added the extras to an Isaac Dalton score for Titans, but Brownlie – with his 26th of the season, went over to make it 31-12 at the interval.

Taunton gave themselves a smidgen of hope of repeating the famous late fightback they performed earlier in the season as Sam Mercer and Dan Swain crossed, Banks landing the second attempt, to reduce the gap to seven with eight minutes to play, but this time Cambridge had the final word as McCloud sealed the deal in injury-time, Johnston adding the extras.

The performance of the day came at Chinnor as they blitzed Rosslyn Park 55-19, all but ending the Londoners’ title hopes.

An astonishing first half saw the hosts head into the break 38-7 up on the back of a Sam Yawayawa double and further tries from Kieran Goss, Luke Carter and Jack Walsh, Nick Smith converting all five and landing a penalty.

Harry Leonard converted a Hugo Ellis score for Park, but their miserable afternoon in Thame got worse after the break as Goss grabbed a second, Smith again landing the kick, and Mark Darlington and the irrepressible Smith touched down to make it 55-7 on the hour mark.

Park grabbed a couple of consolation scores in the final quarter from Henry Spencer and Charlie Piper, Leonard converting the first, but by that stage, it was far too little, too late.

At the other end of the table, Darlington Mowden Park took a major step towards securing their survival with a 25-22 victory against an incredibly gutsy Plymouth Albion side.

An Alex Ducker try gave Albi the lead, but DMP rallied thanks to a brace of conversions from Garry Law following touchdowns from Euan McKirdy and Max Davies, only for Ducker’s second to make it 14-10 at the interval.

Law kicked a penalty before Tom Putt added the extras to a Ramaz Rukhadze effort for 17-17, but another Law three-pointer and Davies’ second pushed the hosts 25-17 in front.

However, Plymouth, who only had two substitutes on the bench, grabbed a brace of bonus-points when Rukhadze doubled his tally to also further enhance their chances of staying in the third tier.

Finally, already-relegated Tonbridge Juddians picked up a fourth win of the campaign and dealt a major blow to Leeds Tykes’ survival bid as Ryan Taylor-Dennehy kicked the winning penalty with the last play of the game in a 29-27 victory at The Slade.

A third-minute Adam Brown try gave Tykes the lead, only for Joe Duffy to cross before Taylor-Dennehy converted.

The fly-half then repeated the trick following tries from Kyle McGhie and Duncan Tout to push TJs 21-5 up at the break.

But Leeds hit back as Tobi Ademakin and Harry Jukes crossed to reduce the deficit, only for a Taylor-Dennehy try to make it 26-15.

Will Hardwick secured the try-bonus for Leeds before Charlie Venables landed the extras, and when Dom Hardman grabbed his side’s fifth of the afternoon with just a minute remaining, it looked like the northerners would be going home with a full bounty.

But it was Taylor-Dennehy who held his nerve, leaving Tykes seven points behind Blackheath, albeit with two games in hand.

Club were beaten for the first time by Rams as they went down 29-17 at Well Hall.
