NEW recruit Andrew Lamb admitted he’s never felt more welcome having joined Rams ahead of the forthcoming campaign.
The versatile three-quarter arrives at Old Bath Road fresh from Brunel University, where he helped his side come agonisingly close to gaining a spot in the BUCS Super League for the first time in their history.
The Scottish ace, who started his career as a Mini at Strathaven RFC before moving onto GHA in Glasgow, also spent six months playing in New Zealand alongside the Crusaders Academy before moving down south.
And having completed his studies, Andrew explained his decision to come to OBR as he said: “While I was at University I knew about Rams and the pedigree they had as a club, and when they approached me, it was a no-brainer.
“When I first came up you could straight away see the community and family feel, and it was impossible to say no to.
“Since being here it’s been absolutely class – I’ve been at a few clubs, but from the moment I rocked up this has definitely felt like the one where straight away I’ve felt part of the team.
“You feel accepted and everyone’s looking out for you, all the guys have been so accommodating, so it’s been fun.”
Capable of covering various positions, Andrew continued: “I’d probably say full-back is my favourite, but I can play on the wing, fly-half, anywhere really.
“I back my skills, and I’d say I’m a bit of an all-rounder – I like to think I’ve got a decent kicking game, plus also handling, core skills and defence.
“But I also can’t wait to learn from the coaches – from what I’ve seen already they’ve got a lot to pass on and so much knowledge I can bounce questions off.”
With Rams opening their pre-season campaign at Aberavon on Saturday (2.30pm), Andrew is hopeful of getting some game time, while the 22-year-old also admitted the chance of playing in front of the Old Bath Road faithful at some stage was another key factor in his signing on.
He ended: “It’s been a while since my last match and the excitement of gameday will be something else – it will be great to get a run out.
“Then when the full season comes round, (playing at OBR) is something I’ve been thinking of because I’ve heard the players talking about it, I’ve seen the highlights and especially the Friday Night Lights games, it just looks like it’s absolutely buzzing – I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t want to run out in front of that support.”
*Welcome to Rams Andrew, and we can’t wait to see you in action!
