Hayman, Baker, Swain and Hayhow also mentioned in dispatches!

SCRUM-HALF Ollie Cole has been selected in The Rugby Paper’s National One Team of the Season.

The No. 9 – who scored on his 100th Rams’ appearance in the penultimate game of the campaign against Cinderford – played a key part in helping his side finish as runners-up, earning his spot among the Dream Team.

The Rugby Paper wrote: “A classy and consistent scrum-half who spearheaded Rams’ formidable campaign that saw them fall just short of the National One title by the narrowest of margins.

“Cole scored seven tries from 23 appearances and always kept defenders on their toes with his sniping ability from the base.

“Cole was part of a one-two punch with James McRae, with both having stellar seasons and Cinderford’s Mike Austin received votes for his quality with hand and boot.”

Other Rams’ players to receive mentions were Connor Hayhow at inside centre, hooker Max Hayman – described as ‘a destructive defender and physical carrier who had an impressive season’ – and tight-head James Baker.

The veteran, who is closing on 400 appearances, was lauded for ‘multiple line breaks and his turn of pace being a huge threat’, with second row Dan Swain also receiving a mention.

Champions Cambridge led the way with six players included – full-back Joe Tarrant, top try-scorer Kwaku Asiedu, hooker Ben Brownlie, tight-head Billy Walker and second rows Kieran Frost and Gareth Baxter.

Third-placed Sale provided both centres in the form of James Robins and Fergus Mulchrone, while Taunton Titans – who escaped relegation on the final day with Rams’ victory against Esher – had both flankers in Ratu Vakalutukali and Charlie Wright.

The pack was completed by Plymouth Albion loose-head Ramaz Rukhadze and Chinnor’s powerful No. 8, Willie Ryan.

Two of the relegated sides provided players, with Hull speedster Mike Adlard on the left wing and Esher fly-half Sam Morley receiving 100 per cent of the votes.

Mulchrone and Ryan were the two players to feature for a second straight year.

The National League Rugby Review Show Team of the Season is due to be revealed over the coming weeks.
