ON THIS DAY - JANUARY 31

Rich Ashton31 Jan 2021 - 08:25

Hornets swatted (2015), Barnstaple beaten (2009), Trowbridge defeat (2004), Barbarians edged out (1998) and much, much more!

On this day in history in…

1925 – A W Saunders try was all ORs had to show for their efforts in a 17-5 reverse at Reading School.

1931 – Pountney kicked a penalty to lead Old Redingensians to a 3-0 victory at Thames Valley.

1948 – ORs drew 6-6 with Brasenose College, Oxford.

Playing with the wind in the first period, they only had a Clifton try to show for their efforts.

After Brasenose levelled, the visitors lost Thomas through injury but despite this setback a Barnes penalty put them back in front.

But they also lost Clifton and not surprisingly conceded a late try.

1953 – Peter Mundy’s try gave Old Redingensians a 3-0 home win against UCSOB.

1959 – ORs agreed to move their match against Bank of England to Beckenham as the Sonning pitch was unplayable.

But they must have regretted the decision after losing 6-5 in a sea of mud.

With the wind, the Old Boys started well as Tony Farr made a break, fed Ball whose pass was knocked over his own line by a Bank defender.

Chris Bignal pounced and Farr converted, but that was as good as it got.

1970 – Gensians lost 11-0 at home to Old Windsorians.

1981 – Scoobie Maynard and Joe Bell crossed the whitewash and Bruce Rothnie kicked a conversion and penalty, but Redingensians lost 15-13 at Phoenix.

1998 – A Phil Trott try and three Dave Cox penalties led Redingensians to a narrow 14-13 home success against Ivel Barbarians.

2004 – Joao Costa’s consolation try was not enough for Rams in a 20-5 reverse against visitors Trowbridge.

2009 – Stand-in skipper Tom Clare bagged a brace and Paddy Conlan and Gavin Marsh also crossed as Rams won 35-29 at home to Barnstaple, Spike Chandler completing the scoring with three conversions and three penalties for a 15-point haul.

2015 – Two penalty tries and further scores from James Baker and Gus Davies, along with three penalties, two penalties and a drop goal from James Brooks, gave Rams a convincing 35-0 home win against Hornets.
