On this day in history in…
1926 – ORs triumphed 6-0 at Osterley.
1929 – The eagerly awaited match against Gwyn Francis’ XV – containing four internationals and five blues – took place on a Wednesday afternoon at Morgan Road.
It ended in a 24-11 victory to the star-studded side, who led 13-3 at half-time, Mason crossing for OR’s points.
In the second half, they took the offensive and good line-out work by Kynaston enabled Stephens to dribble through for Mason’s second try which Kynaston improved.
ORs had to defend bravely to keep the score down, however a Rippingale touchdown gave the score-line more respectability.
1937 – An Adams try was not enough for Old Redingensians as they lost 11-3 to visitors Reading University.
1948 – Clifton’s touchdown was merely a consolation as ORs lost 15-3 at Windsor.
1954 – Tries from Platt and Smith, both improved by Waters, led Redingensians to a 10-5 victory at Staines.
1965 – Gensians lost 17-0 at home to Esher Cardinals.
1976 – A Gareth Rees double and further tries from Steve Cooper, Chapman, Paul Carroll, Malcolm Evans and Thompson proved the bulk of Redingensians’ points in their 36-10 win at Oxford Old Boys.
Rees completed the scoring with four conversions to take his personal points haul to 16.
1982 – Superb place-kicking by Chris Vaal clinched a 15-13 success at Oxford Old Boys, who fielded former Gensian Chris Champion.
Vaal landed two touchline conersions and a penalty from his own half, which added to tries from Tony Lensh and Lester Hinds made it a great afternoon for the visitors.
1983 – The boys in blue lost 20-6 at Maidenhead in their first-ever Berkshire Cup final.
Maids claimed their sixth county title as they swept aside their opponents with tries from skipper Ian Boyd and Dave Course in the first nine minutes.
Pete McNicoll added a conversion and penalty, but Steve Hunt’s two penalties made it 13-6 at the break.
There was no way back for the underdogs and Maids made sure with a Eugene Gratwohl try and further McNicoll kick.
1993 – An Andrew penalty was not enough for Gensians as they lost 15-3 at Bletchley.
1999 - Jez Flynn’s hat-trick helped Redingensians win 41-26 at North Dorset to help them avoid relegation from Southern Counties South.
They clinched their fourth successive league victory after taking a 26-7 interval lead.
Flynn’s brother Nick along with Rob Hancock, Micky Bell and Greg Way also crossed – the latter also landing three conversions.
2004 – A strong first-half display helped Rams to their fifth Southern Counties South win – 19-12 at home to Wootton Bassett.
They surged to a 19-0 advantage in a first half marred only by skipper Richard Hall going off with a dislocated shoulder.
No. 8 Rob Gold touched down both of the opening tries then made another for hooker Andy Amor.
Paul Mackay added two conversions, but Gensians went off the boil in the second half.
2010 – Seb Reynolds grabbed four tries in Rams’ runaway 62-8 victory over doomed Maidenhead.
Yet it was a somewhat hollow success at Old Bath Road as basement side Maids, with only two replacements, played most of the second half with 14 men and ended with 13.
It was Reynolds’ first senior hat-trick, while Peter Freeth weighed in with 22 points – a try, penalty and seven conversions.
Other try-scorers were skipper Simon Parfitt, Nick Dewland and Owen Root.
