ON THIS DAY - MARCH 14

Rich Ashton14 Mar 2021 - 08:25

Cinderford cracker (2020), Chippenham crushed (2009), Thatcham thumped (1998), Bell brace beats Bletchley (1992) and much, much more!

On this day in history in…

1925 – Two tries from Pountney and further touchdowns from Sanuders, Payne and Edwards, added to by a trio of Wheeler conversions, led ORs to a 21-0 home win against Swindon A.

1931 – Old Redingensians lost 30-3 at London Irish A.

1936 – Reading University ended their season with a 5-5 draw at Emmer Green, where the home side fielded five reserves and took time to settle down.

Defence by both sides was sound before Vernon put ORs ahead by converting his own try.

Gensians held the upper hand in the second half until a breakaway try improved from wide out denied them victory.

1953 – Old Redingensians lacked punch and went down 12-0 to visitors Staines.

Despite the score, there was little to choose between the sides except the Middlesex men were more clinical in their finishing.

They led 9-0 at the interval, through poor home defence.

Larkinson, in the pack, was the pick of the losing side.

1959 – Gensians lost 11-0 at Lensbury.

1964 – A Price penalty earned Redingensians a share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw at home to Charing Cross Hospital.

1970 – Tom Bucknell’s try was only a consolation for Gensians in an 11-3 loss to Streatham/Croydon.

1981 – Steve Hunt kicked four penalties, but Redingensians lost 20-12 to visitors Oxford Old Boys.

1987 – Geoff White bagged a brace and Martin Radford also crossed the whitewash, while Graham Tibbett kicked a conversion and two penalties in a 20-9 home win against Oxford Old Boys.

1992 – Joe Bell weighed in with a couple of tries as the men in blue eased their Southern Counties relegation worries with a 28-7 defeat of visitors Bletchley.

Earley scores from Bell and Shane Tawera settled them and a long-range Steve Hunt kick made it 11-4 at the break.

Then Bell, James Warren and Matt Flannigan clinched it, while Hunt added a penalty and conversion.

1998 – A Tim Bell double and further tries from Rob Castell, JJ Bell, Jason McMahon, Micky Bell and Rob Hancock did the bulk of the damage as Gensians won 43-15 at Thatcham, Dave Layder with four conversions to complete the scoring.

2009 – Seb Reynolds and Sid Matthews both scored two tries as Rams crushed Chippenham 56-18.

Warren Abrahams, Jez Flynn, Simon Swadling and Jevon Marsh also dotted down, while Spike Chandler’s five conversions and two penalties completed the scoring.

2020 – Conor Corrigan scored twice and Drew Humberstone, Jack Steadman, Tom Vooght and Connor Hayhow also dotted down as Rams won an absolute thriller 40-38 at Cinderford, Alex Seers landing five conversions.
