On this day in history in…
1924 – A brilliant performance from SH Wheeler helped Old Redingensians beat hosts Reading School 11-6 in just their third-ever fixture.
Wheeler scored a try, added the conversion and also kicked a penalty, which proved enough along with a Taylor try.
1930 – Although a brisk wind made handling difficult, ORs grabbed three tries from Saunders, Pountney and Rippingale in the last quarter-of-an-hour to beat University College Hospital 9-0 at Perivale.
Hodge was very safe at full-back and kicked well against the wind.
1947 – ORs gained their first success of the season – a 14-0 triumph against visitors Oriel College.
Salmon bagged a brace with further tries coming from Sizer and Eyres, with the former also slotting a conversion.
Souch played particularly well in the loose, while the team seemed to have settled down and prospects for the rest of the season looked higher.
1952 – ORs lost their perfect record in an 11-9 home defeat to Old Wycombensians.
They were pushed off the ball by the visitors’ heavier pack, but made their presence felt in the loose.
Ray Fulbrook scored their two tries and Mike Salmon, who starred at full-back, put over a penalty.
1958 – A dour 6-0 home loss to Old Wycombensians.
1969 – Tries from Jim Coutts and Roper, supplemented by a John Taylor conversion, secured a narrow 8-6 victory at High Wycombe.
1975 – Gensians are held 6-6 at home to Phoenix.
1980 – A promising debut by fly-half Ali Verdin was a bright spot in Gensians’ 12-6 defeat by Swindon at Old Bath Road.
Playing against the wind, they held the Wiltshire side to a 6-0 deficit, only to concede a 95-yard interception try when well on top in the second half.
ORs’ only points came from skipper John Beardmore’s try and Chris Vaal’s subsequent conversion.
1986 – It was a disastrous second half for Gensians in their 20-9 defeat by Swindon at the Old Bath Road ground.
They lost three players through injury after the break, with skipper Julian Eames (knee), Dave Snell (trapped nerve) and Graham Tibbett (dislocated shoulder) all departing, meaning the home side finished the game with just 13 men.
They had trailed 13-9 at the interval thanks to three Tibbett penalties.
1997 – Redingensians’ sheer grit and determination together with superior fitness earned them a 13-8 success in a home Berks, Dorset & Wilts derby against Aldermaston.
It was 3-3 at the break thanks to a Dave Cox penalty, but Gensians were trailing on the hour.
However, Jason McMahon changed the complexion of the game with a quick tap penalty before diving over for a try, converted by Cox, before Greg Frost made sure with a sweetly-struck drop goal.
2014 – A Jamie Guttridge double and further scores from Josh Sunley and Andy Amor earned Rams a 31-15 home bonus-point victory against Newton Abbot, James Brooks converting all four tries and adding a penalty.
