ON THIS DAY - OCTOBER 20

Rich Ashton20 Oct 2020 - 07:25

Henderson brace (2018), Baker dots down (2012), Tim Bell scores (2001), try for Lynch (1990) and much more!

On this day in history in…

1928 – A magnificent hat-trick from EWR Stephens and a further try from Crick, supplemented by a conversion from Kynaston, led Old Redingensians to a 14-3victory at Guildford.

1934 – An Emerson try was not enough for ORs as they went down 19-3 at Old Bancroftians.

1951 – Mike Salmon’s penalty was merely a consolation as Old Redingensians lost 16-3 at Old Wycombensians.

1956 – Eric Martin and Peter Mundy dotted down for ORs, but they lost 9-6 at home to Windsor.

1962 – Tries from Colin Evans, Gerry Knight and Peddley, added to by a Tony Farr conversion and drop goal, gave Gensians a 14-3 home Berkshire derby win against Newbury.

1973 – A bad day at the office as ORs are thumped 46-6 at High Wycombe.

1979 – Thireteen points from skipper Bob Lewis eased the Old Bath Road men to a 25-0 friendly success over Phoenix.

But for two disallowed tries, the margin of victory could have been much greater.

Lewis collected a try, drop goal and three conversions, while Tim Sillince, Chris Vaal and Nigel Smith also touched down.

1984 – Gensians were rather flattered by a 19-6 win over Dorset & Wilts champions Swindon at the Old Bath Road ground.

They were fortunate to lead 6-0 at the interval after the Swindon backs squandered good work by the pack.

Graham Tibbett converted Pete Coombs’ try to put the hosts in front, and Steve Hunt then kicked a penalty before touchdowns were added by Graham Smith and Dickie Porter, the latter a length-of-the-field effort. Tibbett added a further conversion.

1990 – Andy Lynch’s try, converted by Steve Hunt, was not enough as Gensians lost 24-6 at home to Marlow.

2001 – Gensians, despite being the better side, went down 32-24 at Marlow in a South West Two East derby.

They had led 24-20 with four minutes to go and left Director of Rugby, Greg Way, fuming.

On the try list for the Sonning men were Way, Tim Bell and Spike Chandler, who also landed three conversions and a penalty.

2007 – Jez Flynn and Buzza crossed the whitewash for Rams, but despite two penalties and a conversion from Spike Chandler, the hosts lost 24-18 to Chinnor.

2012 – James Baker, Will Clark and Rasbridge dotted down in Rams’ 22-15 triumph at Malvern, Guy Swadling adding two conversions and a penalty to seal the win.

2018 – A Ben Henderson brace and tries from James Page, Jak Rossiter and a penalty try, added to by four Alex Seers conversions, secured a 33-18 victory at home to Tonbridge Juddians.
