Defeats to Drifters (1977 & 1983), Robbie Stapley brace leads to Exmouth win (2011) and Jacob Atkins stars against Barnstaple (2016)

On this day in history in...

1927 – ORs visited ERAS Portsmouth and lost a hard-fought game 12-11.

They were handicapped by an injury to fly-half SH Wheeler, who was a passenger for most of the game.

FW and EE Saunders were prominent in the forwards while EJ Hodge was excellent at full-back, kicking and fielding well.

1932 – Russell crossed the whitewash for Old Redingensians, but they were beaten 7-3 at Windsor.

1938 – A Barnes penalty was not enough for ORs, who lost 6-3 at Newbury.

1955 – Centre Mitchell was man-of-the-match as ORs came away from Old Surbitonians with a 14-3 triumph.

He opened the scoring with a drop goal and a Bacon Try made it 6-3 at the turnaround.

Then Mitchell broke from his own 25 to score before Sims put the icing on the cake and Waters converted.

1960 – Peddley dotted down for a score converted by Tony Farr, but ORs were beaten 17-5 at home to London Welsh Druids.

1966 – Visitors Marlow won 19-3 thanks mainly to some foolish defensive errors by Gensians.

They went behind early on, but were back in the game early in the second half when Gerry Knight dribbled the ball 20 yards to score.

However, the revival was soon over when Marlow pounced three times to score tries from home errors.

1977 – Tries from John Beardmore and Pete Carroll were not enough for Gensians, who slipped to a 10-8 reverse at Drifters.

1983 – Julian Eames, Mark Wainwright and Tim Bell were the Gensians’ try scorers in a 21-6 success at Drifters.

The other points came courtesy of three Ali Verdin conversions and a Gerry Howarth drop goal.

1988 – A tough day at the office as hosts Cinderford run out 28-0.

1994 – Steve Gilbert and Neil Bailey crossed for Redingensians, but they were defeated 18-12 at home by Windsor, Cranfield with the conversion.

2005 – Gensians went two points clear at the top of Southern Counties North, but failed to impress in a lacklustre 20-15 win at Grove.

At one stage in the second half they led 15-0, but let the opposition back in the game at 15-15.

Matt Reed and Andy McDaid tries plus an Andy Webb penalty and conversion had them in a commanding position before Craig Clements raced into grab the winner.

2011 - Braces from Jevon Marsh and Robbie Stapley, alongside a Joao Costa effort, fired Rams to a 31-23 victory at Exmouth, Brown adding three conversion.

2016 – Jacob Atkins enjoyed a day to remember during a 31-20 home victory against Barnstaple.

He scored two tries and added three conversions for a 16-point haul, with Jak Rossiter, Ben Henderson and Stevie Bryant completing the scoring.
