ON THIS DAY - OCTOBER 9

Rich Ashton9 Oct 2020 - 07:25

A six-try win (1976), Gary McGregor dots down (1999) and a Craig Clements double and Jevon Marsh try seal victory (2010)

On this day in history...

1926 – A cracking 29-0 home win in the season opener against Osterley.

1937 – Sage was a try scorer in a 13-3 away success at Newbury.

1948 – ORs beat Slough away 17-0. Even though the forwards were evenly matched, the Old Boys had a marked superiority outside the scrum, where Harvey and Salmon shone.

Try scorers were Wilder (2), Salmon, Harvey and Green.

1954 – Tries from Eric Martin, Chris Ball and Easby along with a penalty and conversion from Waters gave ORs a 14-8 home triumph against Old Freemans.

1965 – Tom Bucknell converted Gerry Knight’s try, but Old Redingensians were beaten 13-5 at home to Marlow.

1971– A dire 4-0 reverse at Ruislip.

1976 – Gensians, playing on a newly grassed 1st XV pitch, responded by handing out a 30-6 thrashing to visitors Drifters.

Two Gareth Rees tries gave the Sonning boys a slender 8-0 first-half lead before further scores from Danny Mullins, Paul Carroll and Russell Haworth soon put them in control.

All three were improved by Rees before Geoff Flook brought the try tally to half-a-dozen.

1982 – Gensians defeated visitors Drifters 18-6, but wasted numerous opportunities after going 14-0 up at the interval.

Derek Wood, Dickie Porter and Geoff White touched down for tries, all improved by Steve Hunt.

1993 – Tries from Andy Appleton and JJ Bell could not prevent a 19-10 loss at Windsor.

1999 – Gary McGregor got on the scoresheet for Rams, but they lost 22-5 at home to Wimborne.

2004 – A day to forget as Gensians were hammered 77-8 at Dorchester.

JJ Bell was again on the scoresheet and Andy Tweedie added a penalty, but it was a tough day at the office.

2010 – Craig Clements bagged a brace and Jevon Marsh also dotted down as Rams overcame home side Coney Hill 25-11.

Peter Freeth kicked two penalties and two conversions for a 10-point haul with the boot.
