ON-HOLIDAY ROBBIE BECOMES RAMS' SECOND-EVER GOLD CAP HOLDER

Dad Colin fittingly collects the ultimate honour on behalf of legendary son!

ONLY the second Gold Honours Cap in Rams history was awarded as Rams ended their 2024/25 season with a flourish.

Former President Ian Duncan had become the first to receive the glowing prize at the club’s Centenary Ball back in June last year, with the legendary Robbie Stapley the latest to achieve greatness.

The No. 8’s story has been told before, but the club’s highest-ever first-team try-scorer – with 105 to his name in 245 appearances – has led a storied platform since first playing for the club as a tearaway youngster.

Robbie set an unbroken 27-try record-breaking season in 2011/12, with Rams failing to achieve promotion from Level Five he then spent three years at high-flying Henley Hawks.

However, the icon returned to Old Bath Road in December 2015, inspiring the club to National Two South survival seeded in a 41-39 pre-Christmas victory at Chinnor.

Gradual growth and more tries from Robbie continued until promotion was secured three seasons later, Rams entering National One for the 2019/20 campaign.

Stapley continued to kick on, his leadership famously seeing two penalty tries scored in the final three minutes of the first game with Rosslyn Park before Covid shortened the season with Rams ending second in the standings.

Following a sixth-placed finish upon rugby’s return in 2021, the side came so close to winning the league the following term, level on points with Cambridge but their rivals having picked up one extra draw.

Another runners-up finish, this time to Chinnor, came in 2023/24, Robbie stepping down as skipper to let Max Hayman take the reigns.

There was still more of a tale to tell, however, and in Week Three of this season he became just the second player to reach a century of first-team league tries in the stunning 33-0 home win against Sale.

Seven days later he finally smashed long-term friend and former teammate Jez Flynn’s record, a double at Dings Crusaders cementing his place in history.

And Robbie was not finished there, three more scores coming soon after against Birmingham Moseley, Sedgley Park and Blackheath, while his selfless side – according to DoR Seb Reynolds not always present in his early days – meant he slotted into the second row following an injury to Nile Dacres mid-season.

A fitting send-off came in the final home game of the campaign, a huge crowd applauding Robbie for a wonderful campaign on a day when his brother Connor joined him in the engine room for the first time.

And while he was unable to pick up his cap in person due to a pre-booked holiday, it was somewhat fitting dad Colin, a super-fan of his sons all round the country, was able to take a truly wonderful honour home.

*Once again congratulations on an incredible legacy Robbie, and we hope to see you soon!
