RELIVING LAST SEASON: SEPTEMBER

Four bonus-point wins kick-start campaign with a bang!

WITH the return of National One rugby less than six weeks away we take a month-by-month look back at Rams’ best-ever campaign last season!

Things began in spectacular fashion on the opening day of the season, with Axel Kalling-Smith’s second-minute try and a virtuoso display from returning fly-half Alex Seers leading Rams to a 38-21 home win against newly-promoted Esher.

Axel’s early effort, added to by a Henry Bird 70-metre interception and Charlie Robson try – all added to by Seers – had the hosts 21-0 up inside 22 minutes before the Eees hit back with a converted Ben Robbins effort.

However, Max Hayman went over just before the break, man-of-the-match Seers keeping up his perfect record for 28-7.

The stand-off was next to cross the whitewash, again on target to pretty much put the game to bed, albeit Esher grabbed a penalty try before Sam Morley converted Robbins’ second.
It was Seers who had the final word, though, landing a penalty with 10 minutes to go to complete the scoring.

Week Two saw Rams travel to Chinnor the day after the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, but under the Friday Night Lights, the two sides served up a Kingsey Road cracker.

Two Tom Price penalties put the hosts in front before Ant Marris burrowed over for Seers to convert, a third three-pointer nudging Chinnor back in front at 9-7.

But Rams then utilised their powerful pack to full effect, James McRae, Hayman and James Baker all crossing from close range as another Seers conversion pushed them 24-9 in front.

The hosts game themselves a lifeline as Price knocked over a kick after Mark Darlington rode over at the back of a maul, but a Jak Rossiter try and Seers penalty early in the second period made it 32-16.

Chinnor again rallied from the set-piece, Reece Marshall this time the beneficiary for a converted try, but an interception for the away side ended with Rossiter diving under the posts and Seers making it 39-23.

A cracker continued with Dean Hammond’s converted score giving Chinnor a glimmer of hope, but Rams saw the game out superbly with Seers providing the coup de grace after Hayman doubled his tally at the death.

Rossiter’s hot streak continued the following week as he grabbed a fabulous four tries in a 59-26 home win against Hull.

The wing got the show on the road before Reece Dean’s conversion of a Tomaso Tanumi try edged the Yorkshiremen into a 7-5 lead.

However, Rams wrapped a bonus-point before the break with Robson, Ollie Cole and Rossiter all going over, Seers with two conversions for 24-7.

The kicker was again on target after Kalling-Smith and Drew Humberstone touched down, repeating the trick after Rossiter completed his treble for 45-7.

A Will Hall score provide a fillip for Hull, but the hosts responded quickly with Robson and Rossiter adding to their tallies as Humberstone landed his first kicks of the season for 59-12.

The away side, though, battled to the end and grabbed a try-bonus point with converted efforts from Charlie Beech and Mike Adlard.

Rams produced an outstanding performance to complete the perfect September with a 40-10 triumph at Bishop’s Stortford.

Seers added the extras to an early Hayman effort, Rossiter extending the lead before a Dan Cole penalty cut the gap to 12-3.

Converted scores from Hayman and Vince Everitt, backed up after the break by another from Rossiter and a first of the season for Josh Collis, had the away side in dreamland at 40-3 up.

And while Josh Stannard went over late on for the Hertfordshire men, it was a case of too little, too late.
