CLIVE ROWDEN

Members will be sad to learn of the passing of Clive Rowden after a period of declining health.

When I joined the club in 1965 Clive was Team Secretary. With many leading lights retiring simultaneously it was not an easy time, and three years later Rodney Huggins as Chairman put it to the Committee that we might approach Reading, our bigger and stronger neighbour, with a view to a merger. Clive argued strongly that we should continue and rebuild. Without his contribution that evening, the club might well have come to an end 42 years ago.

Clive’s enthusiasm, charm and wit made him a popular figure, and it was easy for friends to overlook the odd indiscretion on his part. He was also blessed with a wonderfully loving and tolerant wife in Val.

Clive was elected a Life Member for outstanding services to the club and he inspired his son Ashley so that Ashley became one of England’s leading referees. His grandson plays now in the mini section.

Clive’s cremation is at Easthampstead Crematorium at noon on 5th January, with donations to the Alzheimer’s Society. Would members intending to be present kindly ring Ashley on 07810 541731.
