SEB Reynolds is relishing a hectic run of fixtures as Rams look to return to winning ways at home to Taunton Titans tomorrow (3pm).
Following wins at Tonbridge Juddians and at home to Plymouth Albion to kickstart 2022, Rams saw a 22-7 half-time lead at Leeds Tykes overturned last Saturday, the hosts kicking a late penalty to secure a 25-22 success.
The Old Bath Road side suffered a similar fate at Veritas Park earlier in the season as Taunton snatched a one-point win with the last kick of the game, but Seb was quick to point out it is not a revenge mission.
He explained: “The good thing about the busy fixture list is you get the next week to get back out there and get back on the horse.
“It’s not necessarily about putting things right – we’ve always got things we’re constantly working on – and we’ll use this weekend as another opportunity to crack on with those elements.”
Turning his attention to the visitors, he continued: “They’ve done really well since stepping up to National One and are a very dangerous side who play some very good rugby.
“We’ve always had good contests with them, so it should be an exciting game.”
Rams make six changes to the side with Ant Marris and Jamie Guttridge returning in the forwards, Ollie Cole and Rowan Grundy and half-back and Stevie Bryant and Henry Bird further out wide.
And Seb had special praise for Stevie, who is into his 10th year at Old Bath Road and is closing on 200 caps.
He beamed: “Stevie is a class act who has been brilliant for the side over almost a decade – he’s a real stalwart.
“He’s one of the best defensive centres in National One – his decision-making is excellent, his physicality is very good and what he does in the role is so important.”
The more youthful Paul Englezos is a notable addition to the bench, the debutant becoming the 41st player to appear in a matchday squad this season.
Seb explained: “Paul’s an excellent player who has been with us for a couple of years and has progressed really nicely. He’s been knocking on the door and fully deserves his opportunity.
“He’s a very good scrummager who can work on both side and that’s always very valuable.”
He added: “In terms of the number of players we’ve used, some of it has been by design and a lot of it isn’t.
“After a year away from rugby there was always going to be an attritional element to the season, and part of the changes has been the aim of keeping players fresh with intentional rotation, but then we’ve also had injuries to prominent players who have been around the side for a long time.
“That presents an opportunity for others to come into the side and an example came last week with Charlie Robson.
“Henry has been excellent in the side for a good couple of years, but when he had a slight knock Charlie came in and took the chance and now they are on the wings together.”
Lastly, referring to the up-and-down nature of the season so far, Seb concluded: “You’ve got to have a long-term vision of what you want to achieve and fluctuating each week and focusing everything on the win is not how you build for the future.
“I feel like we’re prepared to risk elements for the bigger picture and we’ve got a fantastic group of players – some who’ve been around for a long time and others coming through who we’re tremendously excited about who have deserved opportunities.
“I think we’re in a good place.”
