SUPER SWAIN IS PLAYERS' PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Rich Ashton12 May - 17:00

Axel and McRae fill the podium at end-of-season awards night!

SUPER second row Dan Swain was named Rams’ Players’ Player of the Year at the club’s end-of-season ball.

The destructive forward enjoyed another terrific campaign in which he passed a half century of caps in the Round Eight win at Plymouth Albion, featuring 22 times this term and racking up six tries.

Having missed the first couple of matches with an injury niggle, Dan was superb in the 33-0 victory against Sale, crossing for the first time this season a week later at Dings Crusaders.

He marked his 50th cap by dotting down at Brickfields, and then produced one of the performances of the campaign to help make it 10 wins on the spin at home to Blackheath.

Further tries came back-to-back at Sedgley Park and Club as the season reached the latter stages, with his haul completed by a brilliant brace against Rosslyn Park in the final home game, leaving the former Taunton Titan with 11 five-pointers in 67 appearances for Rams.

Runner-up was the ever-impressive Axel Kalling-Smith, the Sweden captain third top try-scorer with 12 in 22 starts.

He bagged a double in the Friday Night Lights home success against Esher before Christmas, also touching down at Old Bath Road against Leicester Lions, Dings Crusaders, Bishop’s Stortford, Plymouth Albion (two) and Rosslyn Park.

Axel’s efforts on the road came at Esher, Dings, Stortford and Darlington Mowden Park, leaving him with an impressive career haul of 31 tries in 72 games for the club to date.

The bronze medal went to No. 8 James McRae, who crossed the whitewash at Rotherham Titans before grabbing a sensational hat-trick at home to Rosslyn.

The Eton College teacher also captained the side for the first time in the season finale at Darlington.

*Congratulations Swaino and well done Axel and James on fine campaigns!
