TOM Vooght will lead Rams Blues out for the first full-contact Senior Squad game at Old Bath Road since February 2020 tomorrow.
The club vice-captain leads out a strong-looking side against Cinderford – the last team we played in National One before the pandemic halted rugby for the best part of 18 months – on an afternoon when 56 players will wear the Rams jersey as the race for places in the first league game at Cambridge intensifies.
Five props are named in the Blues squad as scrummaging returns, with James Baker, Ant Marris, Jack Steadman and Cam Zeiss all set to return to action for the first time in 17 months alongside Paul Englezos, who made a couple of outings in the adapted rules contests against Chinnor and Maidenhead in May.
Hooking duties will be shared by Ben Henderson and Max Hayman, while there is plenty of power in the second row where Mikey Etete, Connor Stapley and Colin Thomson all feature.
New boys Paul Schroter and Fergus Taylor are equally comfortable playing in the second or back row, while Jamie Guttridge will also feature for the first time since the Cinderford away game in March 2020.
Vooght leads a dynamic back row which also includes Josh Collis, Ross Crame, Jack Norris and recent recruits Vince Everitt – from Hartpury College – and James McRae, previously with Exeter Chiefs and Cornish Pirates.
Ollie Cole, the returning Greg Illingworth and Wasps loanee Oli Monye will be in action at scrum-half, while Drew Humberstone, Louis Ellis and Steffan James will get some game time at stand-off.
In the centres, Terence Babarinsa will look to continue the bright start he made back in May against his former side Cinderford, while Ellis Jones, Stevie Bryant, Connor Hayhow and Kieran Leicester all starred at 12 or 13 in our debut campaign at Level Three.
Leicester also produced some fine displays at full-back during our most recent league campaign, and the 33-man Blues squad is rounded out by fellow back-three men Henry Bird – who made a blistering start to his Rams career before suffering a shoulder injury – Joe Bridger and another Wasp, Toby Baldwin.
The Cinderford game is followed up by Rams Whites taking on Barnes to complete a thrilling double-header, with second row Ollie Taylor set to take the reins as captain.
Young Englezos will be joined among the props by Niall Kidd and Sean McDonnell-Roberts – a duo who helped establish Rams as one of the top scrummaging outfits before – and Reading University man Ed Martin.
New signings Ian Brown and Spencer Hayhow – also capable of playing in the back row – are joined by Ollie Moffitt in the No. 2 jersey, while OT will receive support from Etete and Sam Hadlington in the engine room.
A plethora of options in the back row features the likes of Collis, Norris and McRae doubling up, while Liam Goodison will hope to build on the impressive signs he made since switching from Henley back in May.
Stalwarts Craig Nightingale and Rory Paxton will also feature, along with ex-Colt Roan Noone, while Bath University alumni Sean Ray will hope to make an impact.
At half-back, Sam Boyland, Monye and Joe Booth will share the scrum-half duties, while Sam Nicholls – recruited from Chinnor – will make his long-awaited debut at No. 10 having missed the May matches with a minor niggle.
Former Bristol Academy man and fellow youngster Jack Gapper will also get a run at stand-off, while Carl Morgan – a former Exeter University man alongside Schroter – is happy at 10 or 12.
Babarinsa and Connor Hayhow will both pull double duty in the centres, with Mike Annells also looking to make an impact.
At the back of the park, Bridger will also feature in both games, joined by Mikey Vancura and Adam Porter, both of whom looked good in the games against Chinnor and Maidenhead, and ex-colt Billy Dainton.
Entry to Old Bath Road is free for tomorrow’s games and we look forward to welcoming the Ramily back - for full details, click here.
