TRY-SCORING CONNOR CONTINUES THE BBC BERKSHIRE CHARM

TRY-SCORING CONNOR CONTINUES THE BBC BERKSHIRE CHARM

Rich Ashton5 Sep 2023 - 11:30

Second row adds to remarkable run with opener against Moseley!

OPENING try-scorer Connor Stapley continued the remarkable BBC Radio Berkshire charm as he became the eighth Rams player to touchdown in their next game after appearing on the Weekend Kick-off Show during Saturday’s 50-36 National One victory against Birmingham Moseley.

The second row celebrated his 100th appearance by grabbing the first try of the campaign as the hosts overturned an early 22-7 deficit to run out 50-36 winners ahead of the Friday Night Lights clash with Chinnor in three days’ time.

The remarkable run started back in February when Zach Clow – fresh from bagging a brace on debut in last season’s floodlit clash – backed it up with a stunning score against Rosslyn Park having spoken to Ady Williams the night before.

While hooker Ollie Moffitt, playing his 50th game for the club at Birmingham Moseley the following week, came off the bench and did not touch down, starting No. 2 Max Hayman scored a magnificent hat-trick in a 24-21 success in the Midlands.

Skipper Robbie Stapley was next as he crossed the whitewash in a 52-24 triumph against Leeds Tykes, with Jak Rossiter repeating the trick when Rams were edged out 29-26 on a wet afternoon at Plymouth Albion.

Axel Kalling-Smith returned from Swedish international duty to preview the home Taunton Titans game with Tim Dellor, going onto score twice as well as kicking three conversions in a man-of-the-match display.

Drew Humberstone came so close to continuing the run as Rams went down 35-12 at Sale, the centre agonisingly unable to hoover up a low pass five metres out at Heywood Road, but Ollie Cole restored order on his 100th appearance when he went over in front of a record crowd of 1,284 against Cinderford in the penultimate game last season.

Connor was up next as he crossed at Esher in a 33-19 triumph which ultimately was not enough to stop Cambridge winning the league a week later, Ollie Monye on air before the Blood & Sand overcame Birmingham Moseley to nick the National One title at the death.

But the ex-Oratory School man scored a stunning solo try on Saturday, preceded by Connor’s opener, to take the tally to eight in 10 matches – and things got even better as Hayman went over during a live BBC Berkshire update from Old Bath Road early in the second half against Moseley last time out!
