Monye also in international Sevens action for Great Britain!

RAMS’ Captain’s Player of the Year Axel Kalling-Smith scored a stunning hat-trick for Sweden as they took the bronze medal at Rugby Europe Sevens Trophy Series event in Budapest on Sunday.

Having finished second in their pool to reach the quarter-finals, Axel showed his trademark pace and power to touchdown three times in a 26-12 quarter-final win against Moldova.

Unfortunately for Sweden they were edged out 19-14 by runners-up and overall Series champions Ukraine in the semi-finals, albeit they bounced back to secure third place with a 12-10 victory in the play-off against Croatia.

Having also taken bronze in the first event in Zagreb last month, it meant Sweden finished the two-tournament overall event in third, Croatia claiming silver and the Budapest champions Latvia fourth.

Meanwhile, over in Hamburg, scrum-half Ollie Monye was part of the GB squad which finished fourth in their Championship event.

Despite finishing third in their group, GB qualified for the quarter-finals where they came-from-behind to down Germany 21-19 in a cracker.

Great Britain were knocked out 33-7 by France in the last four, and they then lost 12-7 to Ireland in the play-off – a result which helped the winners also become overall champions having been victorious in the first event in the Algarve.

Spain ended as Hamburg champions after beating France, leaving the two countries third and second overall.
