Visitors claim seventh straight bonus-point victory...just!

MAX Hayman’s magnificent hat-trick helped Rams come-from-behind to secure a battling 24-21 bonus-point success at Birmingham Moseley – a seventh straight National One win for the away side.

It was the hosts who made a perfect start having kicked off with the wind behind them, not allowing their opponents to get out of their own half before they won a penalty which they kicked to the corner.

And Mose made no mistake from the set-piece, a slick rolling maul ending with hooker Ryan Roach crossing for an early score converted by Dan Lewis.

Worse was to follow for Rams, as their hosts rinsed and repeated the trick in almost identical fashion to surge 14-0 up inside the opening quarter.

Yet the visitors sparked into life and began to take control of both possession and territory as the half progressed, deservedly getting off the mark when a clever line-out move saw Hayman throw to the front for Collis to flick it back for the hooker to blast over from five metres out.

Will Partington’s touchline conversion attempt was held up in the wind, but Rams continued to camp in the Birmingham 22, the hosts losing prop Ethan Priest to the sin-bin after three consecutive scrum penalties near their own line.

While Moseley defended superbly before winning a penalty, the visitors quickly won the ball back and after a couple of attempts from close range, skipper Robbie Stapley crossed the whitewash.

The conversion attempt struck the left upright to leave it 14-10 at half-time, but despite continuing to be in command, it took until early in the final quarter for Rams to collect their third try.

And it was Hayman who got it, again powering over from close range for a score added to by replacement Rowan Grundy.

Moseley had looked dangerous with a couple of runs from deep, but having fallen behind, they began to get their big ball carriers on the front foot and following a series of strong charges, Jide Ajayi smashed his way over from within a couple of metres of the line.

Lewis maintained his perfect record to nudge his side 21-17 in front, but Rams showed their resilience once more and hit back as the game entered the final five minutes.

And it was a clever move from five metres out, James McRae held up just shy from a penalty before Hayman crashed over for Grundy to convert.

Moseley had a final chance late on, but Rams won a penalty near their own line before seeing the game out well.
