A MAGNIFICENT second-half performance helped fire Rams to a superb bonus-point 42-22 National One success at Blackheath.
Things could not have started worse for the visitors as a slick move sent Alex Noot over for Club inside two minutes, Mark Cooke landing a fine touchline conversion.
However, Rams warmed to their task and levelled matters when some lovely handling from Drew Humberstone and Ellis Jones created space for the returning Henry Bird to go in on the left, Fraser Honey with the extras.
They then moved in front shortly after as the full back doubled his tally, Bird cutting a nice switch off Honey for a score again converted.
Yet the two-try hero was then harshly sin-binned for a late tackle as Club got back into things on the stroke of half-time, the penalty kicked to the corner and the resultant maul rode over by Ollie Walliker to cut the gap to two points at the interval.
It was Blackheath who then nudged themselves back in front early in the second period, Cooke left with the easiest of penalties after the away side were penalised for not releasing in front of the posts.
Rams, though, began to gain a stranglehold on proceedings during the remainder of the third quarter, camping in their opponents’ 22 until James Baker found his way over the line from a maul.
Honey landed another excellent kick, and the visitors’ secured the bonus-point shortly after as their increasingly dominant scrum won a set-piece against the head five metres from the Club line, replacement scrum-half Ollie Monye making the most of the turnover to snipe across the whitewash.
The conversion extended the advantage to 28-15, but Blackheath hit back swiftly to keep the game well and truly alive as Will Davis peeled off a maul to grab a score added to by Cooke.
However, a magnificent fifth try put Rams back in control, Monye doing superbly to get the ball to Axel Kalling-Smith in limited space on the right.
And from inside his own half, the Swedish international firstly raced down the touchline before collecting his own chip ahead for a memorable score.
Honey maintained his 100 per cent record with another cracking conversion, and the fly-half’s sublime long pass then allowed Charlie Robson to explode down the left to add the proverbial cherry to the cake before two more points were added to set the seal on a fabulous away triumph.
